Can anyone tell me what Jeep is doing with the cracked exhaust manifold issue. I have a '98 with about 50,000 mi. on it but I have the extended warranty. Tanks for any help.

The warranty was extended on 4 cylinder Jeeps and Dakotas to cover the replacement of the front and rear studs and nuts that tend to break off due to exhaust manifold warpage. If you like to push the 4 banger hard, the manifold warps and shears off the studs.
The 4.0s like to crack the exhaust manifold where the pipes all come together. The warranty hasn't been extended on these. The time/mileage varies depending on the year. Check your dealer to see if the repair is covered if you have one of the 4.0Ls.
Hope this helps, good luck!

THe dealers I have spoken with all tell me that 3/36000 is the limit on the 98 manifolds. What a load of crap. Chrysler knows that the product is inferior yet they keep putting it out and then won't replace it. I mean, since when is the exhaust manifold replacement considered a part of periodic maintenance? Only the folks that brought 5x4.5 bolt pattern to jeeps could behave this way!!! ARGH!! Sorry, just venting frustration at the cost of building a 44 front and converting to 5x5.5 so I can have real lock outs.

Update on the ex. manifolds. Thanks to all who responded. Unfortunately they are not extending any coverage on the 4.0. The emissions section is also pretty clearly spelled out (in Ca. they would be covered - I'm in Pa.). Fortunately my extended warranty will cover it but with a $100.00 deductible. What about others who shell out >$20,000.00 and have exhaust manifolds crack? These manufacturers get away with entirely too much when they know darn well they have a problem. Ford is the same way with brakes and rotors as just one example. Don't have much experience with the other brands but suspect they are all pretty much the same. What's it take to get reasonable value and service for our money? Sorry for ranting, just pi&@ed right now because I have two of these situations going on at the same time now.

Go to another dealer and/or contact Chrysler directly. We had the Cat go and it plugged up the exhaust. Guess what, the Cat was warranteed but even though it plugged the exhaust, that wasn't covered. Confirmed this at 3 dealerships. The last dealership though, called Chrysler and explained the problem (I was present for the phone call), they warranteed the entire exhaust, after the Cat of course. They're pretty decent, and I have a new dealership I have the TJ serviced at, so it's in their best interest to make you happy. Good luck and I'm going down to check our TJ's manifold now.

Yep, ours is cracked as well, thanks for the heads up. We have a '97 with over 76K on it, luckily we also have the extended out to 100K, but we have a $50 deductible (not that much, but still enough to be annoying). I was wondering what the air sound was and where it was coming from, couldn't find it. Now let me pose the next question, will it hurt the TJ to run it like this? I mean, can we put off taking it to the dealership until something else happens or should we fix it straight away?

Had the exhaust manifold replaced yesterday for the $100 deductible. They tried everything to not honor it but fortunately I save everything and had it all in black and white. They must be trained to resist in case you don't have the paperwork. The good news is that it now runs like when it was new. I would guess mine was leaking for 20,000 miles or more. Didn't seem to have any adverse effects. I'm relly pleased with the restored performance. I was actually worried about the loss of power that I was experiencing and was looking at things to increase horsepower. It was right under my nose (actually feet). Isn't that usually the case? Simple things first.
