I just bought me a 1985 4x4 720 pickup It will run but the motor is just about gone. It has a z24 4cyl in it right now. I thought about putting a v6 in it but heard that it would require a whole lot of mods and money. So I guess i will just rebuild it or find another motor like it and replace the current one. Let me know of any ideas or suggestions.

There is a way to put in a buick V6 but it is not easy and unless you did it yourself it woud be really expensive. A guy on this board has done it to his 720 and has a web site describing the work. If you look back a month or two in the posts you will find a post about it plus a link to the web site. I can't remember exactly but I think his user name is something like "SRR_Denver". He did an amazing job. When I've checked on the web a replacement Z24 engine is about $1500. Add another $800 to $1000 for the install. If you have the skill, equipment and place to work rebuilding it yourself would be much cheaper. Price for a shop rebuild will vary but is probably close to $2500 if not more.

Daniel, I would recommend buying a used Z24 injected out of a wrecked Finder or HB, rebuild this one, balance it, widen the exhaust and intake channels to gasket size, polish the channels and add a header and a nice exhaust system.
Should work fine for a reasonable price and you can still drive the truck until the engine is ready and do the swap.
Just my 2 cents.......

Cheers

I agree with Mudman. Rebuild or find another FI z24. There is nothing wrong with the z24 engine. It is a decent engine and putting in a v6 would run you a couple thousand dollars. Don't be ashamed of your 4 banger. Build the truck up right, and then go out and out perform all these guys with thier 6s. (though not me /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif).

I have decided to just rebuild it. My dad use to be an auto mechanic so me and him are going to start working on it. I have another question about using a turbo-charger but I dont think I am going to put one on it. Has anyone had alot of success installing one of these?

Like Sid mentioned jpvm did the turbo trick but it was a major mod and who knows what it cost. The z24 of course was not intended to be a turbo; engines meant for turbo are usually designed differently like they have more water flow (cooling) spaces built into them to help remove the extra heat running a turbo generates and they also have an oil cooler. It will be interesting to see how well jp's experiment works out long term. The other point mentioned when a turbo wants to go on a 4X4 is that truck motors tend to make torque at the low RPM end cause off roading (or hauling) is often in the low RPM range while turbos make power at the high end. Exhaust system mods can shift this some but now you are talking even more $$. I'm no expert but this is my understanding.
