*Woodsrider* asked,
*(1) What does the Ignition Module do?*
The solid state ignition module in your jeep uses an electronic pulse from the Hall effect trigger in the distributor.
That trigger pulse sets into motion a series of events including, including triggering the ignition coil, and getting it to fire your spark plugs correctly.
---------------------------------
*(2) Can the Ignition Module be eliminated?*
NO,
Not from your stock ignition. You will have to change ignition types to eliminate the ignition module.
ALL modern electronic ignition have a module of some sort.

There are a couple of aftermarket electronic ignition systems out there that incorporate the module into the distributor pickup, but they still have a 'Module' of sorts...
You are stuck with a 'Module' until something better comes along.

*1. The ignition module takes a pulse from the distributor (formally generated by the points) and pulses the ignition module. The module then takes the pulse and amplifies it, shapes it, and sends it on. It goes to two places, to the coil, and to the ECM.*
This explanation is incorrect, although the gist of it is correct.
The Hall effect trigger only sends a very small, low voltage "timing" pulse to the ignition module.
The ignition module does all voltage switching to the coil.
And in some cases the pulse is sent to the Electronic Control Module (ECM or 'Computer'), modified, then sent to the ignition module.
It some cases, the pulse is sent to the ignition module, then the final ignition coil control is determined by the ECM.
The Breaker Points in a breaker point ignition actually control the voltage switching to the coil, both on and off, and duration of voltage interruption, called 'Dwell'.
The mechanical switch referred to as 'Points' was the weak link of the system, that's why all manufacturers went to solid state electronic ignitions as soon as reliable electronics were available.
