2003 Rubicon skid plates

Posting for a friend. He's an idiot and keeps bashing the underside of his ATV by riding in a rocky river bed. It is fun but its playing hell with the stock aluminum skid plates on the bottom. I was thinkin of grabbing some 1/4" steel and making a real skid plate for it that incorporates the plow mount that sucks to install. My concern is a heavier gauge metal transferring too much of the shock to the frame itself. I want to make is so it never has to come off cuz he keeps stripping the mounting holes in the frame. I've retapped them before and i will have to drill them out 1 size to start over with new threads. The stock plate are so bent up it takes 2 people to put them on in addition to the quad being flipped on its back rack. Any one done something like this before? Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance
