400 Big Bear engine noise

Has anyone heard of any engine problems with the Big Bears. I have a 2001 that has had a tick in it from day 1, it's worse when hot and sounds alot like an old worn 250 Big Red that I used to have. I fixed the Red buy putting a new cam chain in. So now I'm thinking of trying that on this one too. I'm a bit hesitant because it's been like this it's whole life.
I bought it a year ago last june, got it home, rode it, and didn't like the noise. So I called the dealer and took it back the next day. They said they didn't hear anything abnormal and when I brought it in for the first service they would check it over.
Well I ended up having the first service done at a different dealer cause my father really liked the dealer he bought his Big Bear from, they said It wasn't normal but they "didn't want to step on the other dealers feet."
So I took it back where I bought it, they had it for 3 days and said they didn't hear it but they would call for authorization to check and adjust the valves if needed.
I picked it up and they were so busy that they didn't have time to let me warm it up to verify the noise was gone. It wasn't and since then it has been the most coldblooded pig I have ever seen, I have to choke it pretty heavily in hot weather.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like valve adjustment to me. My 96 was like that and adjusted the valve and it was good after that. All depends on how many miles you have on it and what kind of oil you are using in it.
