4x4 Chevy van...coverting from 2WD?

My friend has a 1989 Chevy van...2wd...does anyone have advise or knowledge on converting it to a 4x4. Is it easier to use a straight axle or IFS? Please reply if you have converted one of these. Thanks, Greg.
