Zuke in accident

Well I can't beleive it. I was heading home on friday with my wife and right after it turned dark, I saw a black figure run in fron of my Zuke. It was a mastiff (SPLNG) dog. I could not go into the oncoming lane because of traffic. I pulled to the left as much as I could and the dog made impact on the bumper starting at the turn signal light and all the way to the end of the bumper on the passanger side. The impact killed the dog (I hate that) and pushed the bumper back into the passenger side fron tire. the bumper and the tube that supports it were pushed into the tire so hard that it stopped the tire from spinning and also stopped me from being able to steer the Zuke. We slid off the road into the ditch an came to a stop. Not one single car stopped to help or to check on us. We were fortunate that a man living close by heard the impact and came to help us. I had no way with me of pulling the bumper or frame out of the tire. We took the bumper off and hooked a chain to the frame and pulled and pound4ed the bar until it was out of the way enough to drive the Zuke home. The tire had a mark where the bumper had press against it, but it is still holding air and looks like it is ok. I guess it is time to rethink the fron bumper. I need to geet something that will not end up making a problem worse by costing me the loss of rotation and steering. I need some help and advice. What kind of bumper will offer protection and not cost a arm and a leg?

First of all, was it the stock bumper?

If so, then just about anything you buy or fab will be an vast improvement over the Stock bumper.

If you have the welding skills (or can barter them out) you can fab on pretty easily out of 2 x 4 11-gage box steel and a few "daintly" cut pieces of 1/4" flat steel

You can also pick up bumppers for as little as $50 (Rocky Road's DIY bumper - Rocky Road Outfitters DIY Bumper page - requires some fabbing) to a complete bolt-it-on-and-go units from a number of great vendors like Shrockworks, Calmini, ARB and even Rocky Road! If there are more that I didn't list, My apologies.

Also, check out Acks' FAQ for a mounting system that I used when I fabbed my own bumper. You can use it to build your own or to finish up the Rocky Road DIY. Go to Ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature below) and do a search for towbar (I gotta add "bumper" to the keywords on this article... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ).

Do some more poking around at the FAQ and discover links to all kinds of cool Suzuki 4x4 sites!

Hope this helps!

I made this one myself. I'd be happy to send you a copy of the patterns I made. After I worked it up out of cardboard, I took the patterns to a local metal shop and had them cut out of 1/8" steel and welded by a friend. Grind down the welds and paint it... presto!

They charged me $150 for the metal and cutting it. A six-pack for the welding.
