About the Elian case: 1) the law in the united states affords Cuban defectors one year on our soil and a proper hearing(due process)in court. "We" as Americans "are" sympathetic to Cuban defectors...The Communist regime over there is hell on earth...we in the usa value our numerous(and sometimes taken for granted) freedoms...Why do you think so many Cubans try to leave Cuba??It ain't cause of the view!!
2) I feel for Elian...both sides are wrong(his Miami family for manipulating him, and his father, obviously a puppet of Castro). Elian should stay in the United States...This is clearly not a custody issue..Elian's mother died trying to give him freedoms she never fully enjoyed. If Elian's father was always there for the boy, why wasn't he there when Elian's mother was defecting..he was too busy making other babies with his new wife to really care where Elian was...Castro cares, he wants the U.S. to suffer, and to make a spectacle of us...maybe he has?!
3) Klinton is wrong, the DOJ is wrong and Reno is weak! This case just goes to show that Klinton is NOT against the most oppressive regime known in our world...Communism...shame on him!(Pretty scary!!)
I am sick of hearing the case relentlessly on the news as well as most of you are...but when i read some one writing: "can we shoot the boy to put us out of our misery?" as was posted on VERY OFF TOPIC, I am disgusted!! Most conservatives i have talked to, and seen on FOX news channel have overwhelmingly agreed that we need to keep Elian away from Communist Cuba...and you all call yourselves Conservatives?!!
BTW: Shouldn't the Cuban community in Miami be waving US American Flags???

A child of 6 years old has the "rights" his parents let him have, If a boy from the tip af Africa ended up here would anyone stand outside of a home a protest for him to stay in this country? I some how dont see that happening. The boy's Father is just that his Father, and let him do his job "that of being a father". If his dad loves Castro who are we to say that is wrong? If I believe in God, and you come across my son wandering alone in the woods, are you going to take him from me becuase you dont agree with my love of God? No, and if you tried the US courts would tell you that I can teach my kids how I see fit. You or anyone else have no rights whatsoever when it comes to someone elses kids. The only way that the courts or people should get envolved are if there is a case of neglect or abuse.....period bar none......and a quick death to anyone who steps in between a father and son!

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I agree with Austin. It's the dad's decision, and not anyone else's. I KNOW how the estranged wife can manipulate the kids away from their father, and make up all kinds of lying excuses why she did it, so shame on her for doing so, and shame on us for helping her to deprive a father of his son and a son of his father./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Under NORMAL circumstanes I would agree that the kid belongs with his Dad. I believe that the Miami family also would agree IF the circumstances were NORMAL.(As would all American conservatives, I daresay) The fact is, Cuba is a de facto prison. This man is an inmate who cannot speak freely. Does anybody honestly believe that if the boy would go back, he'd be ALLOWED to stay with his Dad? Elian is destined for a "school camp" where he will be re-indoctrinated in the ways of the "Cuban Revolution" (read brainwashed). Everybody is saying that the kid's video yesterday was coached. What about EVERYTHING that the father says? Who is pulling HIS strings????Hmmmm...../wwwthreads_images/icons/blush.gif

Let the Cubans be Cubans and the Americans be Americans. The fathers
national origin has nothing to do with custody. Also, the U.S. is
becoming overpopulated with the poor, the weary, the huddled masses etc.
soon there won't be room to breathe.

I don't CALL myself anything. Nor do I believe that I have exposed any of my political beliefs on this post. Being in the military I believe at times I have access to information and see things the general public does not. Not to say this makes me any smarter or better than anyone else. As a matter of fact the things that I have learned in recent weeks I wish I could forget. It has made me question the very foundation of what I once believed that I was willing to give my life for. I realized that for this country to run there were certain "covert" activities that must take place. I HAD NO IDEA HOW NAIVE I WAS. Watching the news now in a different light I now find myself questioning everything I hear. My political orientation has also become extremely blurred. Just because I own guns, dislike homos and illegal aliens, does not make me a conservative anymore than being a middle class 26 yr old white male does. If you have stereotyped me into what you feel is a good conservative or not so good conservative you are mistaken. Clinton lied to and cheated on his wife. Dishonesty is not a redeeming quality in a president in my opinion. Clinton dodged the draft and experimented with illegal drugs. Neither of which have I done and by no means consider myself world leader material. For these reasons alone I despise the man and everything he stands for. Anyway to answer your question I do not call myself anything.

Can you fix it?
I got a welder and a grinder. Heck yeah I can fix it./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Just my opinion, but I think he should be with his father. No offence to cubans who come to this country and become citizens but to the ones waving the cuban flag, calling themselves cubans, and the ones who made the coment about miami(forgot ex. but something to the tone of it being seperate then the U.S. and florida) They should be sent back to cuba also.
Another opinion is that Castro is 70something, come on Elian will still be young when Castro takes his "dirt nap" and I believe things will be better then.
Like I said, Just my opinion.
Now as for the news, c-mon,we've heard enough! Front pages, main headlines, this is redicules.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I'm old enough to remember the Bay of Pigs invasion that the super-punk Bobby Kennedy screwed up and made it possible for Castro to remain the "Strong Man" of "COO-BA" ad infinitum. Communism actually does not work, and nations all over the world are finding that out. When Fidel finally takes his "Dirt Nap" (That was a GREAT term!), the time will be right for a big changeover in Cuba. Kids like the Gonzales boy will be the ones who take Cuba back from the Castro commies. EG's memories of the "Disneyland" that he lived in for a few months here in the states will make him want freedom just that much more. He could potentially be quite a "spark plug" for the insurrection, when it finally does come. He belongs in Cuba...with his Dad....asking questions that his Dad can't answer very well, and serving as a reminder of how BAD it really is in Cuba, and helping to keep the flame of freedom alive. If all the Cubans who hang out in Miami were IN CUBA plotting the overthrow of the government, they'd be doing a lot more good than they are hustling tourists and getting on TV./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I agree, Gibby.....and I will always look down on Jimmy Carter for his incredible stupidity in offering to empty out Castro's jails and let the cons immigrate. All of the career criminals that came here courtesy of Jimmy Carter went right to work being........career criminals. Thanks A LOT Jimmy, you spineless wimp!/wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif When I think of all the "pinprick" military incursions the US has made in every crap-hole you can think of, and here we are 90 miles away and well.....there just aren't enough machine guns to go around.....sorry boys....you'll just have to wait till Fidel croaks.....no, we DON'T have any extra ammo.....got any ceegars?/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

First, a child belongs with his parent(s), unless a court has ruled that the parent is unfit. That hasn't happened, so the boy legally must be returned to his father..... regardless of how many people are jumping up and down in the Miami streets trying to convince the media otherwise. Any other decision is contrary to U.S. law..... not that that ever worried Slick WIllie or Janet "Waco" Reno before.

Second, communism failed in Russia and Eastern Europe as soon as the isolation was lifted..... not surprisingly as it doesn't work. The only reason that the communist government in Cuba has lasted so long is because of the U.S. policy towards it. If the U.S. government had allowed free trade with Cuba the people would have seen what they were missing and the communist regime would have toppled long ago.

I'd like to visit Cuba within a year of Castro's death..... before it becomes "Americanized". Wonder if there's any good 'wheeling there (bringing this thread back on topic)?

Well, getting back to on topic, I work with a Cuban American who drove a Jeep when he was in Cuba during the early 1960s before he was allowed to emigrate to the US. He tells me that it (a Willys MB) was essential to getting around on some very primitive roads. We think of wheelin' as a recreation. He needed the Jeep in order to fetch food and water for his family.

I'm sure there are some great shade tree mechanics down there as well; they keep their old trucks and cars running despite no parts other than what they can fabricate or salvage.

I just recently gave a speech on legal immigration. The figures were kinda scary. I am not a racist, many think that if you do not feel like footing every broke a$$, jobless, loser, no matter what color they are, you are being racist somehow., Go Figure. In my research I discovered that with the current immigration trends the non-latino white person will be a minority in this country within LESS than 50 years. I will be a minority by the time I get to enjoy my great grandkids!!!! That is plain messed up. I listened to various others speak of how racist immigration was. Their basis for calling it racist was that when I say illegal alien, everyone is supposed to think of mexicans. I know that was my first thought. But who cares. How many illegal aliens are coming from the other places that border our country, Canada, who cares they usually have some skills to share with us. We have the most pathetic immigration standards in the world but yet we are a "Super Power." Our immigration standards are laughed at by nearly every other country in the world. Canada, Australia, you name it they have better rules to restrict immigration. Our nation is headed down [censored] creek, I'm just waiting to get enough money to dock somewhere and watch it all fall apart. The PEOPLE need to do something and not worry if what they are saying is P.C. The truth is that now when you speak out you are considered a traitor, rebel, anarchist. The fact of the matter is that a long time ago a fellow "traitor/rebel" did speak up. He did stand up for what he thought was right. He was our first President. He was originally labeled a traitor, and he was a "REAL", read that non-asskissing non P.C., person. In my opinion he was a great man. I know of a few of the bad things that he did. Had relations with someone he wasn't married to. Owned "slaves", If you ever saw the way they were treated at his place it was more or less work as a trade for room and borad. The "slave" quarters were very nice houses and fully furnished, nice plates, glasses, furniture, nearly immaculate, etc... I am not advocating slavery by any means. I am just saying that this was a great man that changed this country for the better, he was called a traitor. We have since elected so many REAL TRAITORS that I have no clue how the hell our country has made it this far without being nuked. We elect idiots. I do not think that E.G. should have to grow up in Communism b/c I know I would not like it. BUT, this kids DAD is in another country and legally has the right to parent him. Let the kid go, put real stories on the news, tell the truth over the TV at least once a day, and quit bashing guns b/c it gets ratings. Our Pres. is a loser, liar, adulteror, draft dodging, piece of crap. The sad part is that we have so many idiots in this country that they voted him in twice. There is no easier way to tell someones intelligence than when they say. Bill Clinton is so great, look at all of the good things he did for this country. I have given up trying to explain the whole House of Representatives and Congress voting concept to these morons. They are so stupid that they think bill does all of this himself without knowing the concept of how the gov. works.
I like Cubans, I do not like having to pay for every Tom Dick and Harry that manages to swim, crawl, run, fly into our country. I know why they all try to come to the U.S., we pay for everything. Did you know that if a person has family in another country we will pay for them to move to the U.S. and all of their medical expenses, etc. YUP If a citizen lives in the U.S. and their parents live in Cuba. The gov. will let them come on over, pay for their medical everything, and give them money just for being a senior citizen. This came about b/c the gov. decided these non-citizens deserved the same amount of money that American senior citizens who busted their a$$es all their life get with social security. This is just plain nuts. I do not want to pay for someones dam* parents medical bills and living expenses, that is pure BS. I will have to pay for my parents stuff when the time come and you don't see me suing the gov. b/c I am not getting a free ride. Boo Hoo. I think that my feelings can best be summed up with a quote " I love my Country, It's the Government that scares me!"
