My '93, 4cyl. won't crank. Was running fine, then went to get in it, about 2hrs. later & won't crank - nothing happens. Lights, etc. work fine. I had another starter, so thinking it was that I replaced it. Still nothing! Any ideas would greatly appreciated.

Sure... Check for voltage on either side of Fuse F4, it should be 12 volts.

The ignition switch enables the ignition relay.
When the ignition relay is enabled (closes) then it feeds voltage via the red and yellow wire to the starter solenoid. That, in turn, feeds 12 through that red wire to the starter motor and the starter motor spins.

Being an electrician, I usually start at the problem and work backwards, seems to me to be the shortest way, but according to "others" what do I know about anything, eh. Of course thats after I check the fuse/fuses first. Lokitim where in MD do you live?

BOOGER: I'm in Elkton - Cecil County. I checked all fuses under dash & under hood that I could find.
LEVE: Is F4 & part marked "Sta Rel" under hood in black box by the battery?
RACKDADDY: Just got Jeep on road, so no top off yet. But where is the ignition mod located?

Thanks All

I'm going to take a shot at this...

1st Question - Is the starter solenoid on the starter or fender?

In either case, if you don't hear the solenoid clicking, then it's not being energized....hence, work back from there. If the solenoid is on the right fender then it's easy to use a voltmeter to test for voltage. Down on the starter, not so easy. But chances are, voltage is not getting to it.

So we look for the STA RLY (Starter Relay?). Notice the Brn/Yel wire coming off the bottom right? I'm willing to bet that goes to the clutch safety switch. If the clutch is not pushed in, no ground to this. But I also recall on YJ's where there is a fuse that you can pull that will allow you to crank the engine with the clutch out. Used to hill starts in gear. I think we would need to see this part of the schematic to know how all that is wired.

Ignition switches do go bad but 'usually' it's kind of a gradual process....you can pretty much tell it's acting up....the most common is that it will crank and as soon as it starts and you let go, the engine stops....but it you hold the ign in just the right postion, it will keep running.

Good luck...

directley under dash attatched to the steering column right side, a quick push up should detatch from column. Go from the simplest to the worst case. and a voltage meter would be a great investment for a fellow yj owner.
