I have what's left of a 84 CJ7 (completely rusted out body tub) and would like to know how dificult it is to swap a 87-95 YJ body tub. I would like to stick to steel and YJ tubs seem to be a little easier to find. I can't afford new or I would order one from Willys overland (OEM tub $2600). Questions that come to mind are: Can I use my doors and hard top? Windshield frame? How much modification is needed for the firewall, seat brackets etc.?

I'm doing the same swap right now, 84 CJ-7 to '91 YJ tub. You can use your doors and hardtop. Your windshield frame can be used with a little modification. The defrost system works differently on a YJ, so you need to cut some holes in the top of the tub where the windshield frame sits to allow for defroster air flow. The firewall and seat bracket should fit everything with no modification other than an occasional hole to be drilled on the firewall. Go to my webpage and check out the tubswap page, it has links to a couple of very good sources for the tubswap.

I did this swap on a 80 CJ with a 88 YJ tub. The mods required are as Dan said. You may have holes in the YJ firewall that you have to close (A/C) and some holes you will have to drill/cut (clutch rod, defroster system, gas filler). It is a very straight forward swap. You can also use your CJ tailgate if you are willing to slice into the tub to mount the hinge nut plates.

I based my swap on what Jeepskate did to his CJ-7. His URL is http://jeepskate.4x4.org/

Good luck
