What is the largest rubber I can mount on a stock YJ without lifters?
I had an extra leaf installed on my springs when I had a few replaced. That increased my height by about 1 1/2 inches. My question is 2 part.
1. What is the largest tire that can fit on a stock wheel? (now is 215/75R15)
2. What is the largest wheel I can fit with no lifters? (same bolt pattern)

The largest tire I've seen on a stock wheel is a 35/12.5 bfg mud terrain. As for the biggest tire you can fit on your yj would be 31/10.5 You aslo have to adjust your steering stoppers. If not the tires will rub the springs at full turn.I hope this helps out a bit/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Your front steering linkage (actually the front u-joint spindle units, brain fart, can't think of their names!) has bolts that you can adjust out so that you can't turn past a certain angle, which will keep your tires from rubbing the springs. And you can always add taller bump stops to keep from bottoming out. 31x10.5's sound like a good tire for your jeep, especially if you have stock rims.

Ben, have you really seen a 35x12.5 mounted on a stock YJ rim, aren't the rims only 7" wide?? Wonder how long those tires lasted?

Ed,Those tires are 2 years old and still running stong! And they have been abused by somewhat of a psycho driver[crasy]driving his soa/4in springs/2in body
That poor jeep has been to hell and back more than once, but tires have always held up!You can see his jeep on my webpage,it's the big red one!

If you have the slotted steel wheels - they are 15x6 and i would not recommend running anything wider than 10.5". The wagon style and dish spoke steel wheels are 15X7's - use the same rule no more than 4" wider. The factory aluminum rims are 15X8's.

With 1.5" of lift you could run a 32x9.50 on a wheel with 4 3/4" of backspacing and 7" wide.

I had 30x9.5's on my stock YJ, and they rubbed the flares off road w/ the sway bar disconnected. On road they were nice though.
With an Add A Leaf, i guess you could go w/ 31x10.5's safely, 32's if you dont mind rubbing
good luck

to hell with it, lets go wheelin'

As if life wasn't complicated enough! In Canada we use the metric numbers.
My original tires are P215/75R, which my calculator makes it to be close to
28x8.5. With said calculator, I figure our P235/75 gives me close to 29x9.25
which is probably the 30x9.5's that you mentioned. These will fit on stock
15x7 rims. Now I just have to decide on an agressive tread. Thanks for your
help.

Yes, I have 15x7 stock rims. I just have to do a bit of calculating because
up here we use the metric numbering. My stock tires are P215/75R15. The closest
I calculated to your suggestion were P235/75R15 which is probably 30x9.5 or
there abouts. Thanks.

Hey there,I'm also in canada,Montreal to be exact. The metric system and the flotation system are used, heck pick up a canadian tire catalog and you'll see both are advertised.you probably can fit 31/10.5 without a problem.

Ben

the factory steel wheels on my '89 YJ say 15x7 on them, but when measured with the calipers prove to be 7.5" wide, ditto for the spare rim
