Since I'm in the process of ordering the new lift for my 83 Scrambler I'd like to use the YJ spings for a little more comfort. Can I just leave the CJ spring perches on and use the YJ springs or will the extra 1/2" hanging off the sides ruin the new springs? I really don't want to hassle with changes the CJ perches if it won't do any damage to either component.

Thanks !!

Re: YJ springs with CJ spring perches - will it wo

I'm not sure what width springs it came with, but here's my take...

My rear springs are 2.5" and the D44 perches are good. The front springs are 2", but the D30 perches are tiny..>1.5" (presumably from the narrowtracs also being used in the early CJs with skinny springs??). They're "marginal" with the current 2" springs, but over the winter they're gone (dumptruck rates & they've sagged badly after 30 years) for something a little flexier & the perches will have to go also...

So, I'd say change them out if they are under 1/2" wider than your intended spring width of 2.5".

I would say that you would be better off with the springs Not hanging over the perch, but if I were you I would still use the YJ springs.
I would just weld in a spacer between the tube and the spring. Kind of like extending the perch. If you wanted to get real fancy you could get a set of perches (new ones) run them through a band saw, and weld in the extra length that you need. That would give you a clean flush look.

I run YJ springs on my '80 CJ without any problems. The front is only a 1/4 of an inch per side of the spring different (2" CJ vs 2 1/2" YJ). Hardly noticable. The rear is the same size so it doesn't matter. Make sure you use wider u-bolt plate on the bottom to compinsate for the wider stance of the u-bolts. JKS makes skid plates and front shackle hangers that will allow you to use the YJ springs without any problem.
