As I stare at my Jeep out the window, I realize that my Dana30, steering box/pitman arm, trac-bars, axel, ect. are just sticking out, ready for me to slip up, catch a rock and WHAM, break 'em off.

So, I was looking around the internet for skid plates, and it dawned on me that a front skid plate (ala CHEVY) are not common. I read once that someone found an old stop sign, cut it to size, and bolted it on. I'm NOT this industrious, /wwwthreads_images/icons/blush.gif nor do I have the tools... any ideas out there for a bolt on skid plate for the front of a YJ/CJ/TJ?????

Maybe you guys don't have this irrational fear of breaking stuff you can't fix... call me paranoid...

Did I just invent a product, or will this not work for some reason I haven't seen yet???

I have had the same thoughts for a long time and finally found one a trailquest. Here's the link:

http://www.trailquest.com/Jeep_tanks/index.html

Scroll down to the front skid plate. I ordered the steel one last week, so I'm expecting it this week along with my winch and new bumper--I figured as long as the front end is going to be taken apart I'll install everything at once. It looks like a pretty solid product. I've always wondered why I never see any Jeeps with front end skids--is there a reason not to have one? As far as protecting the D30, check out http://www.fourxdoctor.com/body.html and scroll down to the cover guards. If you don't like these, check out http://www.turbocity.com/JeepGliderNewProducts.htm Also, if you are looking for a very high quality under body skid plate go to www.skid-row.com. Their "Tellico Tough" skid plate is bomber. Since I don't run a lift and have 30" tires I rely on all the protection I can get(scrrrraaaaaaape...). The next step for me is the Tomken gas tank skid. Hope this helps.

I have a custom skid plate on my '77 CJ-7; It involves welding a crossbar under the engine and a custom bumper, so this may be a little more involved than you are looking for. But if anyone is interested in details I'd be more than happy to help.

Hey 93,

I won't order from TQ due to some issues I had with their service (do a search on "Crooks at Trailquest". The issue still isn't resolved, but I am disputing $160 of the 1k charge.

Thanks for the other links... I checked out 4x4 doctor.... those are some great nerf bars! I agree on the diff plate... I found diff skids in http://www.thinkjeep.com that looked ok... Thanks!

Re: YJ Skid Plate--Trailquest service

I was worried about Trailquest after following that thread a while back, but figured I would give them a shot since there is nothing else out there like their front skid. I ordered it last Wed. afternoon and got it today, so I'm not complaining and may use them in the future. The plate feels very solid and is made of 3/16" steel with a nice finish (why, I don't know--it's just going to get scraped off!). I'm not sure how well it will protect the steering components, but I figure it is better than nothing.

There is acompany in the UK called SOuth Down that make skid plates for Land Rovers and Jeeps. They have a company in the States as well Calles South Down US I don't know if they have a site but they work out of New York area I believe.

I will do asearch adn see if something comes up. Their Skid plate is an exceelent piece of kit, and was actually the first thing I put on the my YJ. Their UK phone number is 44 1363 83819
