Hello Good Nissan Off-roadies,

At the office lately a couple of us have been discussing the Xterra, and I was wondering what the concensus of opinion is from a group of folks who really use Nissan off-road. I am a Jeep owner, but am looking to replace a Ford Taurus, I would like something for light off roading - but mostly a commuter vehicle in the suburbs and for long trips. A four-door truck (Frontier?) is my first choice, but the Xterra has some curb appeal as well. Keep in mind I am tall 6'7" and I suspect my son's will need extra leg room in the back before long.
I realize I need to test drive one, but just thought I might get some things to look for or watch out for ahead of time.

TIA

I can't speak for room for a 6'7" person, but I have been offroad with 2 Xterras. I was impressed! Better out of the box than my Pathfinder due to 1" better ground clearance. Decent ride. But it is definitely down class from the Pathfinders (which you'll never fit into with the pwr moonroof!). The Xterra does have more rear leg room than does the 4 door Nissan truck. Less than the Pathfinder, but you wouldn't notice since you sit more upright in the Xterra with the stadium, seating. Here's an Xterra messageboard. A lot of owners will give you feedback.

Check out http://www.myxterra.com this guy has been beating the crap out of one he got so much that the dealer voided most of his warrenties for abusive use. If nothing else you'll get an idea of what these things can put up with out of the box.
Good luck in your decision, and when you get the Xterra we'll look foward to hearing more about it here!
