I'm not sure I agree with your sentiment here. Like the soldier in the poem said, it was his choice.
I was a soldier for six years, and it was my choice.
I'm of the opinion I didn't have a choice, it was my duty to do my hitch. I know I didn't want anyone feeling pity for me because I was doing my part. They sent me cookies and pictures from home, but I still pulled my patrol Christmas day just like every body else.
I feel honor and pride that the soldiers are taking up the slack, not pity or sorrow for them. They are a great bunch of men and women, and they are doing a job most of us can't do or don't want to do.
To them I say, WELL DONE, AND CARRY ON SOLDIER.
So many cats, so few recipes...
