My neighbor has a stock 90 Wrangler with an inline 6. Periodically, while driving down the road it just quits. No sputtering, no roughness, it just shuts down as if someone shut the key off.

Pull over shut the key off, turn the key back on and start and you are back in business. I have my own theories as to what may be wrong but thot I'd throw it out to the group for any thots/recommendations.

Had a guy over on Southern Jeeps with the exact same problem- ended up being the wiring to the fuel pump had worn through just enough to short on bumps-

Ive seen this topic come up numerous times, and 8 out of 10 times it always ends up electrical- anything from the relay underhood, to a loose wire on the pump in the tank. Even had one that was in the column- bad keyswitch/ignition.

Mine did the same thing a couple of times. It is the Throttle Position Sensor or the Crankcase Position Sensor.

You can pull the diagnostic codes off of the dash with the check engine light to be sure which one it is. Drive it around for a few minutes and then stop. Do not cut off the engine yet. Rev it up to 2500 rpms and hold for a minute. Slowly let the engine return to idle speed. Turn the key off and back on three times but do not turn it back to the lock position or start. Leave it in the run position the third time, do not restart, and the check enigine light will start to flash. Write down the number of flashes for each code. It will start with 11. There will be a short pause between each number and a longer pause between each number sequence. The final code will be 55. If it does not have AC it will flash 33 for the AC relay, this is normal. I suggest running this diagnostic a couple of times to be sure of the numbers and to get a hang of how they flash out.

The codes are listed in the Haynes manual to tell you what has gone wrong. I can't find my manual right now to post the TPS & CPS codes for you. If you don't have a manual, post the codes here and I will look them up for you. Or you may be able to look it up in a book at the local parts store. Some have a full diagnostic book under the counter.

Good info - thanks. I figured since it was doing it under the same condition that it mite be a sensor altho I also guessed maybe the computer or maybe the coil. But I'll try the check engine routine - which is about as much fun as programing a vcr - and see what I get. Again thanks for the tips

I'm still think electrical, not fuel but I'll also check the fuel pump wiring cuz that sounds like a common problem amongst Jeeps even if its not the problem right now. Oops wait a minute that sounds dangerously close to preventative maintainence. Never mind.

A 1990 will be caberated not fuel injected. It has the 258 with a piece of %$#& carb. But the fuel pump should be mechanical.

I had a similar problem with an old CJ, turned out to be the negative battery cable.

Let us know what you find.
