Shopping for a late 80's early 90's wrangler. I have a 72 commando but not ready for road. What should I look for? Many ads list "new engines" is engine failure a common problem? Any advice appreciated. j Golden

I know that in 91 they changed the design to be a 4.0 motor with fuel injection,
well the motors going bad, only if u do not take care of them i know there is a few on this board with over 150k, and me i have 140k on my cj still running!
i have just took the jeep off the road a couple of months ago cause i bought another jeep!
I know that the pre 91 jeeps can be a pain with carberaturs that with all the vacum lines.

Try to stay away from the 2.5L 4cyl. With 33's and the stock 4.11 gears I got about 14mpg and it had little if any balls.
You see what I have in it now.

This was discussed here not long ago - look back and do a search....

in a nutshell - bad standard tranny up to about 90, injection and 4.0 came out in 90-91 also, automatic is a pretty good tranny, internal slave cylinder on standard up to I think 92 or so? It's hard to replace. Not exactly sure on the year on that one. Rear Dana 35 is no prize. There were no optional rear ends.

Good luck in your search

One last thing... You might want to look for one with minimal mods... that way you know that (hopefully) it hasn't seen too many tough off-road miles. Look for a 24 y/o girl whose pappy bought it for her, and it hasn't seen 4wd since the factory tested it...

I say look for a hard-top... too...
