WOW I just had a V8

I guess ya'll seen that coming. I've been driving it around for a few days now, love it. The only problem is, I can't seem to keep my foot out of it.

I went with mechanical clutch linkage, works really well, thanks Dave. I did go with headers and dual exhaust. 2.25" pipe and Super Turbos out the back, with a H pipe. Very quiet, nice rumble.

The junkyard trany SM465, works perfect. All I have to do now, is put a fan on it. I'm thinking electric, what do ya'll think?

I got electric on my V8 and I love it....go with electric...there is a LONG thread discussing various different fan types....do a little search on the board and you can get every opinion there is on different types of fans.

I think you are talking about the one titled "Re: flex fan vs fan clutch". Some of us didn't like being
limited to those two choices so we did a write in campaign for the electric. I don't think the poll showed
a clear winner, but I think if you go electric, you'll be very happy. I don't think the flex fan got any
support.

I was thinking of putting an electric fan in my stock fan shroud. What would be a better choice, junkyard fan, or one from Auto Zone? I figured that a junkyard fan whould move more air.

Man, I'm glad to see that you did not use the hydraulic clutch. It would have fried behind those headers anyway/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif heh heh. I will defer to my distinguished Jeepers, CJTaz and CJDave, on this subject.
However, I am not convinced that electrics are any better all around that a clutch fan is. Either of the fore mentioned types are, of course, superior than a straight mechanical fan for MOVEABLE power plants. So I will agree to disagree!! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif to be perfectly honest, I am not completely comfortable with the electric concept for overall bedrock security since it depends on several systems: the mechanical drive to the alternator; the electric power producing system within the alternator; the thermostatically controlled power delivery system; and the electric, shaft-turning system in the fan motor. If I was setting out from Bathrobi to Yeetcongo through the trackless desert, I think I would pull a Lindberg, and keep it simple with a belt-driven fan. Hey, call me old-fashioned(which I am) but the more complex it is, well....you get the idea./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

If you decide on an electric fan, you can make a very simple mount and shroud all in one. Gey a piece of sheetmetal that is slightly
larger than the radiator, lay the stock shroud on it and drill holes to match. Then using a saw cut a hole for the fan. Mount the fan to the
sheetmetal and then bolt it to radiator in place of the stock shroud. This insures all the air going through the fan. Simple and cheap.

I don't know what size radiator you have but if you do not nave a 4 core then you may want to go with a belt and a pusher on the outside of the radiator.

After thinking on it some, I will modify my statement concerning moveable power plants. A straight mechanical fan is perfectly ok for rear engined vehicles, like the amphibs I operated in the service. They used a hydraulic driven fan with no clutch which shut down when in marine drive and that Farmall tractor we spoke of also has a straight fan, as well. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I was a little short onn room when I put the 305 TPI in my Jeep so I went back and got the two fans that
came out of the same Firebird as the engine. They fit perfect behind the radiator on a custom mount
that I made out of 3/4" sq. tubing and well away from the water pump pulley. No shroud required with 2
fans and I can run either or both as neccesary.

I just bought a 16" electric fan from Advanced Auto today. I'm not to impressed with the air that it moves. I can make it fit the stock shroud, and seal it around the fan and shroud. But, I just can't see how this fan can keep it cool with that little amount of air. Will this work?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif My head moonguy says to remind you that the optimum RPM for a fan and the best airflow speed over the fins is NOT NECESSARILY what it is at 4700 engine RPM! If the air is moving through the fins, it WILL COOL. You don't need a hurricane, just the right speed and volumne. The electric fan I bought was from Summit racing, flex-a-lite black magic 150...and that sucker MOVES SOME AIR!! And its only 15".....it might be worth a couple extra bucks to get a good fan(mine was 180 bucks, ouch) but worth every cent...I did break a couple of fan blades cause I forgot to turn it off for water crossings, but replacement blades were only 20 bucks!!!

I've been running without a fan for a few days. Even running around town, it stays nice and cool. Even let it idle while I go in Town & Country and get a coffee, nice and cool. I put in a 180 degree thermostat with a little hole drilled in it/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. The 258 got a little on the warm side if I gave it a lot of gas, but not the 350, it stays right where it is suppose to be, even at WOT. I'll try the 16" electric fan, if I don't like it I'll get two 12" fans.
