I have a 88 XJ 4 door 4.0. I am wanting to hook up a amplifier and was wondering where I can put the power wire thru the firewall. I was also wondering what would be a good ground in the back. Any help greatly appreciated!

There is a wiring grommet on the drivers side above the fuse box, I've run all my wires through that. As far as a good ground, the 88 doesnt have a direct battery to chassis strap, add one, it will make grounds to the body much better. You could ground it to any good metal whereever you mount the amp.

Jason.. if you need FSM action for your year, email me and I'll give you the spot to get them.

through the firewall is where i ran my power for my 600watt crossfire, and I dont know if there would be much of a difference adding a ground wire from the battery to the body since the ground from the battery goes to the engine which in turn is grounded to the body? I dont know though, It might make a straight ground path though instead of going through the engine first

on my ground I ran a wire to the inside floor tire mount, then unbolted it and bolted it back on with the wire underneath one of the bolts, and it works just fine...

Running something from the battery directly to the body does help with the ground. Running a long cable to the block then from that a strap to the firewall is a long way for ground to get to the body (where most accessories ground to). When I did my battery cables a while back and upgraded them to 1/0 welding cable I had some scraps and ran a ground wire to the body directly from the battery. Checking resistance from different bolts and bare metal around the body from the battery before the strap it was marginal, with the strap its lower.

Only problem with running it thru the firewall plug is trying to get the plugs back in. OMG i just about broke my hand tryin to get them back in. So i went to the hardware store and got a spray foam. This seems to work well on holes in the firewall. Not only dose it seal it up it keeps the water & wind out.

Where are you mounting your amp? I have a 94' XJ 4-door, and I ran into the same problem with the power wires. But I am really looking for a nice out of the way place to mount my 4-channel amp for my interior highs. And I can't seem to find a suitable place...I'm about to just slap it in the cargo area and drill some screws to the floor! Any suggestions? I already looked into underneath the passenger dash, under rear seats, and under front seats, not enough room in any of those places just so ya know.

Also, the idea about under the rear seats for the ground is a good plan. It's pretty easy to just cut a small slit in the carpeting under there and slap a bolt right to the body. Or the bolt holding the seat belt clips works fairly well as a ground too.

What guage of wire are you running? I have to run 4 guage on mine, I have a MTX 775 watt momno block that won't run off anything else. Any time I've ran 4ga, I drill a hole, and use a plastic snap in grommet. Imay seem like a bitch of a task (especially in XJ's, with hardly any room to fit a drill under the dash) but if you are running 4ga or bigger, it's less time than working that stuff through a factory grommet. BTW, if you drive an automatic, there is almost *always* a decent spot to drill or a premade grommet where the clutch would've been if manual. Enjoy!
