Wiring for Lights on Roof

Those of you who have lights mounted on a rack how did you wire them? The sound of drilling through my roof Just doesn't sound appealing, but what ever it takes.

I Think on newer XJs there's a hole on the top of the B pillar covered with a plastic plug. it was put there for police to run thier light I think. Just open both front and rear doors and you can see it. I think you can aslo run wires under the A pillar behind the door.

I just ran the wire down the inside rail of the roof rack and into the rear cargo lid nect to the hinge. You can see the wires in the back a bit but there is enough room to where they don't pinch. Then run them behind all of the plastic molding to the front......

so those of you who have lights on your jeeps ..

how'd you wire them.?????????????

. i just got a cargo rack and i have 2 hella 1000 FF's ... they come wtih the wires and a relay but i lost the directions... i'm thinkin of just running them a strait line to the battery and a fuse and switch in the dash... then ground the lights to the rack or whatnot...

you really need to use that relay when youre pulling that much juice instead of running it all through the toggle. you could run your hot (10ga) to the relay and then use something as small as the cig lighter through the toggle to operate the relay turning on your lights or even tap your relay hot to you bright lights so they all come one with one flip of the switch. instant retna burn (lol)

try looking up the Hella website, or any number of light manufaturers online or the how-to sites, and you oughta be able to use the relay properly. It isnt tough to do it right in the first place.

Yeah you can put in 100 watt bulbs. Bulbs are bulbs. What you paid for was the Hella name and their refrator/reflector design to throw the light. If you go with bigger bulbs make sure you wire it right the first time with a good 10ga (at least) wire and a 30 amp relay. Just remember the more amps you draw off your system the harder your alternator is working so upgrade tha main charging system wiring as well.

I scored some 1ga for my Jeep but I'll be darned if I can't find some 1ga lugs or connectors anywhere......even a welding shop. What's up with that?

I spent $19 bucks on a set of "Pilot" brand lights from Auto Zone and I gurantee they have the same bulbs your Hella's have.

well i didnt buy them ... they were given to me ....

when you say replace the main chargin wires you mean the ground strap, main positive and negative wires, the wires to your alt, and the hot wire to the starter ... right?...

i work at radioshack so 2gauge wire is of no short supply...

You got it. The bigger the wire the better the flow. It won't "increase" your charging capabilities but will allow your system to work at it maximum potential. Same way with plug wires. Bigger or better wires won't "give you more power" thay just allow the plugs to get the maximum spark. Of course you have to watch for EM problems with plug wires which is why 8.5mm is about as big as you can go and still listen to your radio. The quicker electricity can make it's loop (positive to negative) the more efficent your system and the less likely of a meltdown from heat created by resistance.
