If they do the job, magnets or not, why worry about it?

Interesting note - I put one on a Jeepster I had (a Hayden?) - in front of the radiator. I used a simple on-off switch. I also had a green light by the switch to remind me it was on that illuminated with the fan. Nothing complicated - KISS.

When driving down the highway I noticed the light came on - with the fan switch off! Thought something was awry at first.

The fan was turning from the air blowing through it, and the fan motor was acting like a generator, powering the light.
So the fan motor must have had permanent magnets.

It even did it when not driving, just facing into a breeze. I had fun with it, I told a friend that's how I kept the battery charged - he believed it!

Yep, motors generate electricity while they are running too. That's what keeps them from burning up. It's back EMF, a current in the opposite direction to the current applied. That reduces the net current.

From your description, I expect that was a permanent magnet motor but it didn't have to be to act as a generator. There would be enough residual magnetism from hysteresis to start generating current then it would start providing it's own field current.

Black as ground - Not just battery operated devices, TVs, radios, computers, aircraft, spacecraft, industrial machines, etc. often use black to signify a ground or return.
Henceforth, please make it clear if you are referring to earth ground
, chassis ground
, signal ground
, or some other kind of ground. It can be confusing otherwise.

So you think if he doesn't know which type of ground it is, the fan won't work?

earth?
chassis?
signal?
coffee?
or grounds for divorce?

The project here is to help him get it working, have you completely lost sight of that?

No, YOU were confusing the issues AGAIN talking about black wire for chassis ground as opposed to white wire for the earth grounded conductor of an A/C system.

TAZ - are you talking about a JEEP A/C or a BUILDING'S A/C?

This forum is concerning JEEPS, not buildings! I'm sure you can find a forum dedicated to house wiring - and tell them about how to wire a Jeep!

On a Jeep AC system black is ground - the compressor clutch and the blower motor uses black as the ground - sometimes called the return, sometimes called chassis ground, or in the UK sometimes called earth.

But wire your own Jeep with conduit, J-boxes, wire nuts, solid wire, you can even put a house window air conditioner in it if you want - it's your Jeep! (If you actually have one.)

But be sure to get a permit from the building department and get it inspected before you try to turn on the power.

I take it that rant is because of the slash. A mere slip of the fingers. Comments noted. Excuse me. A mistake like that could mean the end of the free world.

Warthog, sorry I did not see this post sooner. Here is a little picture of what you want. Top position on the switch is always on, middle is always off, and bottom is auto. The numbers next to the relay are the numbers used on Bosch type relays if that is what you are using. This drawing assumes that your thermal switch has a switched hot run to it and it closes when up to temp. If your thermal switch grounds when up to temp let me know and I will post a new drawing.

I don't know if thread is still "active" or not after all the banter. The set up that bandhmo2 posted is basically just like the kit I bought from Flex-a-lite and it has worked flawlessly for 3 years.

The kit came with wiring and quality connectors including a bosch relay. I like TeamRush's idea of breakers - I currently have fuses that came with the kit and I may swap over to a circuit breaker. However, I will probably have to order them since the auto part stores in town are not very good. Can you get circuit breakers at Autozone?

We haven’t heard back, but we think this is a 2 speed fan. The circuit shown above is for a single speed.

I was waiting on verification before I posted this so as not to confuse the subject.

Hank - yes it's still active, I still need to get home so I can test the fan....gonna be at work for a couple more weeks yet, unless the office decides to ship me off somewhere else. :cussing:

I guess I shouldn't complain, as I'm sure there are a few board members without work still.

cooling fan

yes i want to install a fan or fans for a back-up and maybe set therm at about 210 deg. maybe i can find one at junk yard around here , a tarus or what ever but the wiring will be a puzzle to me also?? 350 chevy built, but the fan sets a bit low at the radiador, and ill have to build a shroud. cj5

Here is how I wired my Taurus fan... I keep it on low, which the relay is hooked up with a temp sensor so when it hits 180 degrees Low is turned on... then you have the middle position for OFF.. and I can switch it to high if I need too..
the fan also has one more wire, which is ground coming off of it....

the low relay is the generic fan control relay from Autozone.. it's like 40 bucks.. and you can adjust the temp for when you want it to come on..

the high side is a 80 amp relay i get off line for 8 bucks.. works great.. but you need larger connectors for the power in and out of it.. since it is made to handle high amps..
