Windshield wipers now have 2 speeds: Off and Max. What\'s wrong?

Last night while using my windshield wipers (which is about 360 days a year since I live near Seattle) I had them set on an intermitent speed. Then there was a slight burning smell and they stopped moving. They dont work now unless I turn them on full power (which wouldn't bother me so much if the wiper motor wasn't so freakin' loud). But regardless, the intermitent speed function doesn't work anymore.
Does anybody have an idea what part went bad, where I access it on my Jeep, and where I get a new one other than the dealership?

Sorry that I can't help you with you wiper problem...I was just wondering where near Seattle you are...I am actually from North Bend...

Whoa! I'm in North Bend also. I live in the semi-new housing development at exit 31.
I was exploring roads at exit 38 last night when my wipers crapped out on me.

bad switch, go to the dealer.......get one and install.

I'm guessing you have a YJ. Your intermittant wiper control is a black box Veloro'd under your dash by the steering column. The power transistor may have fried. If so, follow the below instructions >exactly<. This can be complicated!

1. Pull the box out and disconnect it.

2. Throw it away.

3. Buy a new one from the dealer for around $32.00.

4. Have a nice day!

Oooh... Hmmm... Geees...
Not sure if I'm qualified to do that on my own. Better just take it to an auto electric shop and pay them their $60/hour to do it!

Well that was almost correct. Here are the steps I took:

1) Went to the dealer.
2) Paid $63.00 for a new one (since not one electrical shop could help me out or figure what part I needed).
3) Installed it and it DIDN'T work.
4) Realized I re-installed the old one (oops... I met a girl the other day so there have been things on my mind aside from my Jeep lately! (It's definitely Miller Time)).
5) Installed the NEW part and viola - Intermitent wipers again!

BTW, is this part refurbishable? If so, I'll give it to anyone who's strapped for cash and needs a new one. Unless of course you wanna pay the price for new.
