HELP! What have I done wrong?! I have a '91 Samurai. I run a small winch up front that raises and lowers a little snow plow. I am running a GM alternator and a 30a fuse in place of the fusible link. When I rev the engine to get a little more power for heavy snow the fuse blows.

I'm sure you guys running winches can tell me how I have this wired wrong. Can you tell me how the wires should run from the winch, alternator, battery and fuse? There is a reference to it here:
http://lists.topica.com/lists/suzuki.4x4/read/message.html?sort=d&mid=911430165&start=1

but I don't get what they are saying.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

your problem is the winch can draw more than 30 amps. Another problem is the alternator can put out more than 30 amps. There was a discussion on this you realy cant run a fuse between the alternator and battery. Unless the fuse is larger than the max output of the alternator.

Hey szki272, Thanks for the info, I searched for the discussion prior to posting my question, as I seemed to remember something on it, but all I could find was the one where sarge was running the accessory block. I don't think everyone is doing that though, so I was wondering how others solved this. Did you take a look at the link I posted? There has to be away to still have some protection that was previously provided by the fusible link, yet run a winch.

Anyone else running a winch and GM alternator? How did you work around this?

Thanks!

what I did was run a new 8 guage fine strand wire from the alt to the battery. (no fuse) I conected all the accesorys thru a 40 amp circuit breaker.(not the starter) So the electrical is protected.

I tried to respond to your PM and for some reason it won't let me.

But the answer is:
The directions I have w/ my winch said to run it between the winch and the positive post on the bat. I don't know anyting about something having to be ran between the bat and the alt.
