The general rule of thumb is twice your vehilce weight. A zuk fully loaded on the trail may go close to 3,000lbs. I would say a 6,000 is an optimum size. Bigger is always better though

I have used a 1500 it worked but not well it would only work in a barely stuck cituation with a 3500 I would get a pulley block to double the line pull but slow the line speed to 1/2 of a single line

8000 # no questions asked.

I have actually been buried in nasty, stinky blue clay that gave my 8000 lb winch a hard time........the whole bottom of the truck was in contact and it had a vacuum on the truck. It would not come out with just the winch alone, the tires had to be spinning for the truck to move at all (zuk was locked f&r on 32's). I had to dig ruts while winching for probably 60-70 ft. It sucked real bad.

It's all a trade off. I like receiver mounts so I can move one winch where I need it, when I need it. I have used a 3500 Superwinch to unstick my 67 Bronco which is way heavier than my Samurai. However, it was slow. If I would have needed to use a snatch block, it would have been half fast (or twice as slow).

Also, the bigger the winch, the more it weighs so you can have one mounted full time on your Zuk and deal with the extra weight or you can use the receiver mount. In which case, you can either get your buddy to help you lug that 100 pound winch through the slop you're stuck in or you can get them to video tape it for the rest of us to enjoy. You might even win some $$ from AFV.

I've got an 8274 on my zook.

They are quite heavy (110lb) compared to a 8000i at 74lbs, but you get a lot of bang for your buck. - Lots of cable, very fast, pretty bullet proof etc. Did I mention fast?

Most of the competition trucks use them over here, and most are at least twice my weight!

It happily pulls my zook along without a snatch block when Im pushing a wall of mud up to bonnet level (or hood level for you guys!). I haven't had to use the snatch block yet.

It was also good for me as it fits between the uprights of my bull bars (you guys probably call it a bumper).
If I bought a low mount I would have had to make a new one.

Here's a pic
