Will 258 tow my toy?

Ok this may not exactly apply to the short wheelbase board but it's worth a shot, my girlfreind almost has me talked into getting a late 80's cherokee and the only thing stopping me besides the cost right now is the fact if I have two vehicles there are times when I would have to travel with both, so the cherokee would have to tow my '83 toyota maybe once or twice a year. Is this a realistic plan? if so would I be better off with a manual or auto trans. thanks for any help

The post 83 Cherokees never came with a 258. Early ones had a very anemic 2.8 v6, then came the 4.0 straight 6.. The 4.0 would do OK with the right gearing, if it has an auto use a tranny cooler. The 2.8 can hardly pull itself. There are also 4 cyl. ones out there, they are probably actually better than the 2.8.

Thanks for reminding me of the V-6. So now for another question when did the XJ's get the 4.0?

88 was the fisrt version of the 4.0 then in 90 the came out with the High Output 4.0 that made like 20 more hp (prob just some changes to the computer but I'm not entirely sure on that)
