Wicked Vibration, 96\' Discovery

Symptom: After hitting a bump on paved roads, usually speeds over 80 km/h, the steering wheel has a strong vibration for several seconds after impact. It feels like driving down a washboard road. Does anybody have any suggestions, or possibly causes. We have jacked up the vehicle, and everything seems tight in the front end. The vehicle is a 1996 Discovery, 120,000 km, see the for sale post for more info on the vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just a guess, but I would have to say you probably have a bad shock absorber. Unlike leafsprings coil springs do not self dampen very well. When the spring is set in motion by the bump the combination of rotating mass (tire and wheel) and the poorly damping spring could lead to the condition you describe. I would also have the balance on the tires checked.

I'd also check ALL the steering linkage, wheel bearings, lug nuts, spindles, steering shaft, & steering box bolts.

I'm with steve on this, check EVERYTHING in the front, steering, and suspension, also make sure your tires are balanced.
