I like the idea of outlawing "stupid". Remember Gallagher? The comedian who clobbers watermelons? Anyhow, in one of his routines, he said that instead of the State Patrol using radar guns, they should issue toy pistols with those suction cup darts & little "stupid" signs to all drivers. Then, when you see someone's seatbelt hanging out of the door making sparks on the pavement, or driving across a bridge with the turn signal on, you could stick a "stupid" sign on their car. Once a car accumulates 4 or 5 "stupid" signs, the Highway Patrol would pull them over & issue a ticket. Not too practical, but I REALLY like it in theory /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif.

I guess I don't really understand what is wrong with what these guys do...I mean so they have a bunch of money to buy a new Xterra...Are you jealous or something???...I mean I can see that is a bad thing if they were tresspassing on private property...Also how do you know that it isn't private property they are allowed to use or that this area is a designated ORV park...I guess I would like to know exactly know what they did wrong...

We don't have too many places to four wheel in New Jersey, and with idiots like this there won't be anywhere left.

Well, I do have to say that having to click through all those pictures was torture, not because of the the pictures, but because there
was no way to skip them.
After looking at each and everyone of those pictues I think that people are complaining, because pictures show these SUV running
over the "tread lightly" motto. The main thing that they are doing is damaging the river/stream they are driving through. When you
go splashing through a river you do the following: you run things over (aka dead fish, plants, etc), you kick up silt that chokes fish
and blocks light from getting to plants (aka dead fish, plants, etc), and you disrupt the life cycles of fish and animals, so that they can
have trouble breeding and eating.
What is comes down to is for everytime you go splashing through a river you are KILLING fish and animals. This may be play for us,
but it is there lives.

I think the pics on that site look worse than they actually are. I do a lot of wheeling in the Pines & I'm pretty sure everything they drove through was standing water (no streams or rivers). Either way, there's no need to try to tear up the forest. They are just making the sport look bad.

Re: WOOO Hay hold on..........

Hay I E-mailed this guy and exchanged a few mails and explained why his site was used as a bad example. The guy was very receptive and understood. He really seemed like a nice guy and he had never met these folks before the ride. He's new to the sport and just needs a wake up call not a linching! He's a photo buff and didn't relize th potental conflict. Give the guy some time to figure it out and don't send the hate mail. Why send hate mail when you can teach them why and have an ali?

I just looked at those pics again, and they were blasting through streams. Maybe they caused more damage than I thought.

Nice job on the creation of a new Tread Lightly follower. Odd behavior for someone named Grim Reaper /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif You know what? You can make a lot more friends with a smile and a kind word than you can with a .38 and believe me, I am a real fan of six shooters. It's just that you need SOMETHING ELSE at times./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: WOOO Hay hold on..........

The pictures didn't look that bad. We've all gone through rivers or ponds before. I personally like to crawl, it lets me enjoy the experience as well as the passengers. It looked like the trail went through the water. It would have really pissed me off if they went tearing up the land off the trail, but in all the pictures they seem to be on the trail. I think we've all torn up a trail once or twice, I have been in spots where I needed to hit it and the mud went flying. At least it's on the trail. They look like they hammed it up for the camera. Just my 2 cents, that's not the way I drive, but I'd stop and chat with them on the trail.

Re: WOOO Hay hold on..........

I have been following the posts on the issue of my site and have decided it is about time to respond.

I have been thinking about the possible effects of my actions this weekend and I am in the process (it'll take a while since I'll be out of town) of updating the site and removing most of the offending images so as not to further hurt the cause. I met up with a couple guys who I have been chatting with for some time online with but had never met. They were expecting a little more technical ride and I guess they were disappointed when we realized the area we went to had zero hills or anything even remotely technical. We started taking photos of the guys going through puddles. Our boyish instincts got the better of us. We were in an area that was hardpacked sand a few feet above the level of a marshy area so I can only guess that the puddles were just the natural water level and the bottoms were solid sand. no mud there, just brownish backwater. most of the stuff being splashed around was leaves and water. I admit there were a couple of places that were soft bottomed and we probably contributed to the damage, for this I apologize. I also apologize for the stream crossing when there was a valid bridge next to it, but our trucks were not all covered in mud just a little of the sand that had stuck. Mine is the yellow Xterra and if you saw my streamcrossing it was at a low enough speed so as to cause as little harm to the streambed as possible. Our actions were easily scrutinized, but that is because we didn't take photos of the trails that we cleared or the trash we collected. I guess the action shots are a lot more interesting and since we didn't have any vertical areas to climb our photos leaned more on splashing through puddles. By the way, the fire road racing was just riding along a trail in an open area single file, we were not racing like the Dukes of Hazzard or anything.
I will mend my ways and add the tread lightly logo to my site and a page that states a disclaimer that this kind of behavior should not be copied or idolized. I guess we saw one too many commercials. I was pleased with the photos though, they really had a sense of action which I haven't seen on other sites. Maybe this is the reason.

Re: WOOO Hay hold on..........

The photography was great. The subject matter is controversial. Join one of the Jersey clubs, every club needs a good photographer on a run, especially on that can wheel. There are only 3 things I miss about since leaving New Jersey: the Jersey shore, the Pine Barrens and a young lady named Monique.

Re: WOOO Hay hold on..........

Matt thanks for posting a follow up about this. I am glad to hear the other side of the story, and see that it was maybe not as bad as
it looked. It is very easy to just bash someone when you only hear one side of a story.
Good luck with the photography. Once I finish paying for my CJ rebuild that is thing I am interested in checking out.
Thanks,
Ethan
