This subject received a lot of response in another thread, but signing these petitions is not enough. Read on if you want to know why.

WHY FORM LETTERS AND PETITIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH!!

On December 4th, 1999 I attended a meeting hosted by the Mark Twain National Forest based in Rolla, MO to discuss President Clinton's "Roadless Proposal". Details of that meeting are supplied in another post. But, one subject that came up was petitions and form letters. I've always felt that neither was particularly effective in dealing with any government agency or branch. My suspicions were confirmed at this meeting.

The National Forest Service collects "comments" from the public on various proposals, Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), etc. A person who sends a letter with a dozen specific, on-topic "comments" will be credited for a dozen "comments". One who rambles on and makes no point, will be given credit for zero "comments". Form letters are considered for their "comments",BUT ONLY ONE COPY OF A FORM LETTER WILL RECEIVE CREDIT. THE OTHERS WILL BE DISCARDED..

The same applies to petitions. THE NUMBER OF SIGNATURES DOES NOT MATTER. ONLY THE NUMBER OF LEGITIMATE "COMMENTS" WILL BE COUNTED"..

People, don't stop signing the petitions or sending the form letters. But, don't kid yourselves. It's not enough. If you want to really make a difference, you have to send your own letters (or modify the "form" letters enough to make them unique) and attend meetings. As people who enjoy Off-Highway driving, we should all already know that the path of least resistance will provide the fewest benefits.

It can't be stressed how important it is to go to the public meetings, many of which are this month. The url for the website with the
meeting schedule is in an earlier post ref. Roadless website.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif There was a TV short on recently which detailed how the pro-homosexual governor here in CA deals with the mail. They get thousands of letters each day, and basically they just blow them off as just "bull'. They disconnect the e-mail, and ignore the FAXes. ONLY MONEY talks to politicians, and the homos bought the governor. The rest is bull****, and bull**** walks. It's the same in Washington. The ONLY thing that matters is........getting re-elected; bottom line....end of story. So...figure out how to get to their re-election guy and work from there. As TEX pointed out, the rest is pretty much inneffective./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif
