why do i have to pump my brakes in order to stop the truck?

... and how can i remedy this?

If the pedal is hard but just low and pumping them brings the pedal up higher, your rear breaks need to be adjusted. If the pedal sinks after the initial pump then they need to be bleed or there is a leak.

As always check the basics first...is it low on fluid? if so...were did it go ? Are the shoes adjusted ? There should't be any air in the system unless it's leaking in somewhere...

I wondered the same thing once. The next day i had no brakes for a 4 way stop. I was lucky. It was the master cylinder
