Ok , this is probably a bonehead question ( its been a VERY long day) but why cant a person strip off the TBI system off a Chevy 350 and adapt it to a 304 etc.. ? I am not an automotive electrical genius ( and thats probably the issue) but with an adapter made for the injection plate , why cant it be done ?

The only thing that might pose a problem is the distributor. It has to have all that esc crap in it to run the knock sensor. You can get a new chip burned with that feature removed though.. Other than that, its just a matter of doing it.Jegs has a plate that holly sales for there tbi kit for about 30 bucks.it's for a 4 barrel intake though, one for a two barrel might be hard to come by.Call howell and see if they offer one.

You can do anything. A friend took the fuel injection off a Chevy 4.3 V-6 and grafted it onto his 258 I-6, works well. I don't know any more than that, but he ran it for a few years without any problems.

go to the early bronco board and there is a post on how to do this. you should be able to do it with a jeep motor if you can do it to a ford. you would want one off of the 305 though because you won't have to get a new chip burned if you keep the motor as close to the same size at the donor. i plan on doing this to my 351w in the future. go to the eb board and check it out.

Well this is all good /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif information guys . Thank you . I thought I might be flogging a dead horse here.
I would really like injection but I find the price of the kits quite steep . For the price of the kit I can get myself an entire ( used) 350 engine with the harness and everything included.

I just posted a similar question and then turned to your post. My topic is "Has anyone put a Chevy TBI on an AMC 360?" if you want to look in that thread too.

The distributor isn't a problem.
A magnetic trigger is a magnetic trigger, it will just have to be connected to the GM Module so the computer can hook up. This is simple, but you will have to make a protective case for the module out of sheet metal, and you will have to change to the GM style remote coil, or match the resistance with the Ford E-core coil.

If it's a I-6, you can put the late modle module in a say, '76 I-6 distributor that has the remote coil.
That solves the distributor problem.

We haven't exactly got the tach thing figured out, but Mag should be able to help with that....

You will want to use a camshaft with similar profile so the fuel injection knows what the valve train is doing.
GM fuel injection systems are big on vacuum signal, so make sure your engine isn't tired, and not making any vacuum anymore or the cam isn't shot....
Otherwise, it's just wiring and keeping the color codes straight.

Aaron , my motor is the 304 . Now I haven`t bought the camshaft yet , so you are saying to get a grind similar to the year of the 350 I take the TBI off of , correct ? My 304 only has 10,000 mi on it so it should have lots of vacuum . I am going to have to do some serious checking as to how the wreckers feel about pulling off the TBI setup . If I get the green light on this , what all should I strip off the donor vehicle ? This will be a first (for me)on this type of operation so your( and others) help would be great . I want to make sure to get all the parts the first time . Thanks . Back to welding /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Later.......

Jeff

PS. Thanks Jeeper2 for the tip on the 360 post I will check that out later....

On the Red Green show , its hilarious , its a show built for guys . Too funny man !!

LEADER is correct.
Label them, take copious notes and drawings and TAKE PICTURES!!
Those disposable cameras work well, but do drawings too because the pictures don't always turn out.

TAKE EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON!!
Take all of the engine wiring harnesses, all of the computer harnesses, and invest in a factory service manual with the wiring diagrams of the donor vehicle.

Your best bet is to use a similar cam shaft to the type used in the donor vehicle.
GM throttle body FI is real dependent on manifold vacuum, (MAP Sensors) so if you make vacuum like the donor, you will have successfully fooled the FI into believing it's still on the original car.

Not much to it.
If I were you, I'd check out he specs on the HiPo version of what ever you are going to use...
Like if you are doing an AMC 304, I'd look into the HiPo 305 chevy cam specs, and the HiPo 305 fuel injection system.

If I were doing an AMC 360, I look into the high output 350 chevy cam specs, and the HiPo 350 fuel injection system.

Anyone have anything to add?

wont you have to redo all of hte fuel lines? to increase the pressure ability, and diameter? also ad an in the tank fuel pump.

I wonder what Howell charges to burn an EPROM for an AMC engine?

HHmmm /wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif, I didnt know a HiPer. TBI system was out there. I thought if you had a 305 w/TBI then that was it . What vehicles came with the HP version and how would I know by looking at a setup in the junk yard ? I`m not really a Ford guy but what do the older Ford 302`s use for a system ? So basically if I get a cam grind that would be an upgrade(RV type) for a 305 that would do . Thanks again all !!!

I guess my only question is. How much time is it going to take to do this, and after you spend all that time, is it going to run right. If it dosn't run right, how much time are you going to spend trying to make it run right before you throw in the towel, and take it to a profesional who will charge you at least $55 dollars an hour to make it run right. I am not trying to discourage anyone from doing this, but if you don't have experience in this type of swap, I would say that it would cost more in the long run to do this than if you bought an aftermarket kit, and you would have alot more time into it. It would be a very good learning experience, and I am sure it could be done, but is it really cost effective? Another source for a universal kit is Turbo city. They use GM parts just like Howell. I am not sure of the price, but I know that they also offer a performance FI kit.

Thanks, Ray

Well thats just it isn`t it . If I go the auto wreckers tomorrow and find they want 200-300 bucks for a used TBI setup with computer and such , is it worth it ? That will be the deciding factor here , how much they want . See I live in Canada and by the time exchange hits and duty and such the aftermarket kit runs me $ 1500.00 in CAN funds . This is why I am looking at this angle first .
Just checked , the Turbo City kit is $ 1600.00
