who has AMC\'s old records?

Hey guys...
how's everybody's summers going? havent been able to be online too much now that I'm away from College for the summer. anywho...
I was talking to a guy i know about his 1969 Mustang Mach 1 Cobra Jet, and he showed me a letter he got from Ford telling him the original specs, color, build date, etc for his VIN #. So i got interested, and want to know that kind of historical info about my CJ-7. Only one problem though, as you might have guessed: AMC no longer exists! I wrote to Chrysler, hoping they bought the records, but they dont have them. Any of you guys had this info looked up in the past? or know who owns AMC's old records? any help would be great!

PS: i already know how to translate the vin #, to find out the original motor, tranny, and GVWR. Thanks!

Re: who has AMC\'s old records?

I don't know about AMC's. A couple of years ago I went and got the print out on my 95 YJ from the dealer. It listed everthing on the Jeep. It is kind of nice to know all of the information. I also have a Ford Model A in the garage. I was looking for information on it about the same time and had a little luck just making postings on BBS's like this. I would also check some of the sites that are dedicated to the older Willey's. Some of those sites are more frequented by people that are more into history.

Good question! Every manufacture has its own code system. The number usually tell you the year, model, plant location, package type. ect.. I'm sure if you could find what the codes mean you could get most of the story.

You might check with http://www.willysoverland.com. I know they bought a bunch of the old Jeep stuff. I know they have some original Willy's and Kaiser stuff, but I am not sure about AMC.

I got lucky - I got my jeep from the first owner, so I have the original sticker, manual, all that stuff.
But I would be curious to find out about translating the VIN - for future reference.

Re: who has AMC\'s old records?

I'm one of the lucky few. I got my CJ-5 from the original owner with the sticker hidden behind a speaker cover on the driver side with 3/4" wholes drilled all in it. Lucky for me the vin number is still one, also got the original manual. It would be nice to have all the specs, and for the original owner to have not screwed up all the wiring. OH well though.
Re: who has AMC\'s old records?

Go to Jeepgod's web page http://www.jeepgod.net/ . He has a vin decoder page within his web site.
