I need some suggestions about a new tranny. I have a 231 Buick V6 with a M20 or M21 tranny to a (I think) dana 20 t-case. The first gear ratio in the tranny is either 2.52:1 or 2.20:1 and I need a much lower first gear. Perferably 5.0:1 to 7.0:1 ratio. I need it to mate to the buick now and possible a 350 in the future. Also I would like to keep the 20 t-case and I want a manual(perferably 4 or 5 speed or higher). I know that there are many options. NV4500, SM420, SM465, T18. Which is the best choice or are there any other trannies I should look at. Thanks.

If you're looking for a manual tranny and have the cash, it's hard to
beat the NV with the 5th gear overdrive. For ease of installation and those
of us on a budget, a T18/98 with the 6 to 1 first gear works great. The only
complaint I have w/ the 98 I dropped in was the lack of a back-up switch. Had
to wire the lamps to a toggle switch. Can't speak for the GM trannies.
