I am thinking of replacing the Kustom Fit seats that are in the Jeep for something a little more comfortable. I like the reclining seats but I have a CJ5 and can't recline back to far. Summit Racing has really cheap plastic seats that are really thin but I don't know how comfortable they are.

Any Ideas?

I had really old Kustom Fit seats and I just threw them in the trash. - They were toast and not all that great for comfort I thought. I just put in seats out of a '94 Mazda MX-6 and they are great for comfort and the headrest actually touches your head which I like. Also, the headrest is all one pice kind of like a stock CJ seat but there's a hole in it for style at the shoulder level. This is perfect for snaking a Y-harness through and what made them stand out to me.

Getting them in there took alot of fabrication work, but it was very worth it and they move all around now too.

P.S. My friend has those Summit seats with the covers in his Commando. DO NOT - whatever you do - DO NOT get them - they are the most uncomfortable seats on the earth! They must be designed for drag cars, because 10 seconds is about as long as you can stand to sit in them!

Regardless of all I've heard about Steel Horse, I have the buckets and fold and tumble rear bench and am very very pleased with them, very comfortable and the price was right. At the price of some of the seats available, I could replace these steelhorse seats 3 times over. And there is no way I could have went with the recliners in my cj5, they're against the fender wells now.

That which does not kill me only makes me stronger (or dumber).

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif We used the Steel Horse lo-back in our CJ, and although we have zero miles on them, the way that they wrap up on each side seems real nice. We have them tucked inboard about an inch and a half farther than stock, real close to the SteelHorse console we installed. The ensemble is very nice and feels comfy/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif But then, all we have to go on is what my moonguys/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif say, and what do they really know?/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gifThey are only moonguys/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

There are many seats from other vehicles that will fit or are a very close fit, and usually very cheap at a junkyard. I have 84 RX-7
seats in my CJ-7, a virtual bolt in, recline, adjustable lumbar, wrap around better than stock, and best of all they were free! I
know others on this board have used other kinds of seats, my point is, and the usual point of most on this board, is that there
is always a cheaper and just as good or better way to do it. You could probably pick up a pair and have them reupholstered for
less than a decent pair of custom seats.

I've had Steel Horse seats in my CJ for over 4 yrs now and I think they're okay. They look good, feel good, install easy and are cheap. Mine are showing wear at the seams, but have not torn yet. If you are tall your head may brush the bikini top. I might buy them again.

I to have heard a lot of steele horse horror stories but I have had steele horse front hi back buckets and rear fold and tumble for some time now. I really like the looks of them and they are holding up pretty good. I have a 7 so I'm not sure how they would fit in a 5. If you are talking about the hard plastic drag seats from Summit keep in mind those seats are for nine second blasts down a quarter mile. I have sat in them in a couple drag cars before and can tell you they get hard real fast.

I know you will all think i am crazy, but i have the RCI seats from Summit and i really like them. I have added padding under the covers and it does me fine. They are very study, i can grab one and rock the jeep back and forth.

I just got two Saturn buckets with the adjustable headrests at the junkyard for 75 bucks. My girlfriend has a Saturn and that's where we got the idea from. The are really comfortable and they hug you pretty good. 4 door seats don't tip forward so try to get them from a 2 door.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIi got those Rci seat from summitt, those are the most hardest un comfortable seat I ever had, but they was cheap and weather proof which is all I wanted. If you driving over ten miles take one of those blow up rings. I have them in a cj2a and because of the back I had to cut my wheelwells. I do not reccomend for anything but a mudbuggy.

I went with some major upgrades for the driver's seat. It is a Jamex that does not adjust (besides the fore and aft sliding I salvaged from the old frame). You can click on the picture below to see the install, it was a bit of work...

Just bought a DJ-5C! Sliding doors and right-hand drive are cool /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

I ended up getting some really nice 92 Mituibishi Elicpse seats from a local insurance yard. Here are the pictures

I had to make some custom brackets to go in the jeep.. I probably didn't have to but, I wanted to anyway...

They are super comfortable, but the custom brackets, which I probably didn't need took a lot of work, measuring, test fittng, etc...

The UPS man just delivered my steel horse seats last night. Gotta love coming home to boxes of Jeep parts on the front porch! It's like X-mas in July! I'll install them today. I went through Carparts.com because of all the discounts they're offering. I ended up getting $50 off each seat by ordering them seperately. I looked at Recaro's and lots of other seats but couldn't see spending $150 for a pair of adaptor brackets, and I needed new seats bad, so spending lots of time making custom brackets was out of the question. Right now my stock drivers seat is propped up by an ice chest wedged against the back seat.

With Steel Horse or Bestop seats, which I have, you may have some interference with the bottom, rear corners of the seat, and the fender-wells. This only applies to the CJ5 and only with the seats all the way back. I had to modify my fender well to get my seat to go all the way back and still could use another inch or so. The seats also sit up too high which puts your head very close to the roll bar. When my friend (big Jim) gets into my CJ, his head is higher than the windshield frame.
I love the rear fold and tumble seat. It is very convenient and can be removed quickly.
Here's a picture or two of my seat install,
