hey guys. i am venturing over from the suzuki samurai forum........i am going to be replacing the head gaskets on my 93 ranger with 4.0 v-6 (which has 200,000 and still uses no oil) and was curious which brand of head gaskets you guys recomend for fords. also, do you recomend buying the entire "head set" with all gaskets and new head bolts? i know on suzukis i can get away with re-using head bolts because the block and head are soft aluminum.

i can get ford parts at cost plus 10% so using genuine ford gaskets is very much an option for me. what are your opinions?? thanks

What Norm said, with conviction !!!!!!!!!

You're motor is the same explorer motor that Felpro really stepped up to the plate for everyone and invented those incredible PermaDryPlus valve cover gaskets that solved all the problems for explorers.

Nobody with a Ford upper intake manifold hanging over their valve cover wants to use any other valve cover gasket anymore. Put em'on three years ago, not a leak since. Sure they're expensive and they probably don't come in the tear down kit, but they're worth every penny.

Sixlitre

p.s./
Check out a gasket company named Papco for your import when it starts leaking.

Fel-pro is an excellent choice, but have the heads resurfaced or at least checked carefully longitudinally & diagonally between cyls with a straightedge cuz a couple years back when i worked in a machine shop 4.0s were almost always way out of whack for such a short v-6 cylinder head.
As long as the torque to yield bolts came out without excessive force and this IS the first time off, they should be fine....

thanks for the replys guys!

i will have to get the heads magnafluxed anyways so checking for warpage will be done as well. i have heard that the 4.0 and 2.9 engines are prone to cracking heads. my buddy gave me these prices from the ford stealership:

-head set $160
-headbolts $32
-new fuel injector o-rings $6.50 (10 pk)
-t-stat
-valve covers $20 EA (these are the updated leak stopper ones from ford)
-new waterpump $49 (i have had poor luck with re-man units)

i will be checking into the felpro blue valve cover gaskets. i think that is what was installed on this engine at about 75,000 miles and never leaked since.

how are these prices? high, desent, ok ?? any other comments or things i might need or not need?
