Which carbs are street legal?

Hi all. Someone asked this question the other day, but search is down and I can't find it. Are the Ponys and Holleys street legal in states that require emissions inspections? Is anyone running a Weber and had it pass(or fail) an inspection? TIA

Thanks Sarge. But I'm talking about a visual inspection. If the inspector sees the plugs and wires hanging loose, he will know something's been changed, right? That's becoming an issue here in NC. You're not allowed to make any (obvious) changes under the hood (not even a different air cleaner!)

No aftermarket carburator carrier SMOG certification. If you have to pass a visual, the Weber will not make it. It can squeak by some sniffer tests, but will always lose on a visual.

Just rebuild the stock carb. You'll get better performance on and offroad than the Weber anyway.

My suggestion is to look around for a testing facility that likes 4x4's. I just went outside the metro atlanta area and found me a good old boy who wanted to make a buck. walla, visual and sniffer passed no problem. The sniffer tests have a wide margin for where you run the rpm during the test and if you find a guy who knows how to do it he can run it at the bottom range of the rpm scale and this means lower emissions. Mine actually passed the sniffer cleaner with my weber than it did stock, this was probably caused by the fact that the guy who tested it when it was a stock carb was a punk kid that ran my rpm up really high on the scale and the other guy is now a good friend who knows how you have to do it to get it to pass.

I am in the same boat (and state) you are Mr. Surly. I ran into the visual inspection problem myself. I got rejected over a MegaFlow filter. Fortunately, that was only about a 10 minute swap back to the old stuff. I have been wanting to upgrade my carb and engine but worry about not passing due to visual checks in the engine bay.

Ronin, I've been reading (and enjoying) your posts for a long time, but had no idea you were in NC. Your Bio is blank! Please fill it out for us. Heck, you might be in the same town as me! As for upgrading your engine and carb, I understand that it is legal if you take EVERYTHING out of a later model vehicle (engine, fuel injection or carb, wiring harness, computer, gas tank, and all hoses) and put ALL of it in your Zuk. But that still rules out the Webers, Ponies and Holleys. I think. Anyone else got .02 to put in?

Jeepin Doberman, Thanks for the suggestion. I used to rely on that same technique in the past. But now, NC's inspection laws are getting even stricter, and a lot of small shops that used to do inspections are giving it up. They say if they get caught passing ONE car that's not legal, the fines are so high it would put them out of business. I'll bet that within five years, the only places that will do inspections anymore are the dealerships

I actually tucked the wires under my intake manifold and cut my stock air cleaner conection to fit the weber( should have bought an adapter) no problems here I was going to just glue the wire to spots on the carb here and there but didnt

Ya know, I keep meaninng to fill out my profile and just keep forgetting. I am about 10 minutes outside of downtown Raleigh. As for the engine stuff, I knew about the newer model engine being accetable, but I hate to give up my Doug Thorely and other stuff for my 1.3L. Like I said in my other post just recently, I would love to run a fully modified 1.3L with Sumo 2 head, adjustable cam and Weber or other carb. But I am thinking, the 1.6 16valve may be the way to go so I know I will pass inspection, but it is a tough choice.

It is rediculous that a 1.3 liter engine can be the cause of making someone a CRIMINAL. Heck, Buy two samurais. Build one the way you want and keep the other bone legal stock. Switching the dash (vin #) is easyier than all of this other BS.

I watched buses every day with no one but the driver aboard belch smoke that would almost blind you and yet, I was the criminal...
