Well I know where the hole is the problem is there are no threads for me to put the bolt into the hole. I just sawpped an Ax15 into my 87 YJ and brought the NP231 that was wih it into it as well. The problem is I want to put my 4WD shaft back on and there are no threads to put the U-bolt on with. any ideas besides just getting nuts and putting them on the end of the screws, I dont know if that will be secure enough and all...

Some use straps like what you probly used before and some use U-bolts which have nuts screw onto the backside. The latter style is stronger and preffered so do it that way. And DEFINATELY change that U-joint. You're in there now so make your life easier. It does look on the verge of self destruction.

That tansfer was proubly behind a V-8 or high output inline 6... Ive seen the strap type with small bolts screwing in on 6's & 4cly ,,, go with the Ubolts & not the straps ,, MUCH STONGER ,,, Oh & yes DO replace the
U-jiont .

Go to the parts store and ask drive shaft u-bolts for a late 70'2 early 80's CJ they used the u-bolt type.

I checked the Help Section. The Jeep model didnt fit, the span was just shy of being the right size and the GM model bolt they had was the same span. There was also a ford model there that was bigger then the others, but that was too big. The U-bolt for the Late model CJs would be fine except that was for a different model TC than what I have, I have a NP231. I wasnt even aware that they used the U-bolt style on these, but I cant find em anywhere....

There is a chance that you have a CV style output yoke. I don't think you can use a u-bolt in that style. I know they were used in the front of CJ's and FSJ's but I don't know if they were used in the front of YJ's. The TJ's use them too. If the transfer case you bought is from a TJ, then I'm almost positive that you have the CV style.

What has the different TC got to do with it, if it would be fine? Unless the length was different maybe. Need more info on this

What I mean is if I had a late model CJ, then the U-bolts I found in the Help section would work just fine. I believe they were made to fit with the Model 20 or dana 300. I have a YJ, and I swapped in the TC from a Cherokee, but it is still a NP231. I also checked up on the Cherokees, and all that was listed for the Cherokees was the strap type. This doesnt make any sense.

I think its a CV style, Ive heard a couple people tell me this. In which case I am going to have swap on a different Yoke. To all who answered just want to say thanks.
