I never seem to need FourLo even when i am driving in rough conidtions(not off-road).I was just driving through deep snow in 4hi with almost no slippage uphill. It makes me think that 4LO is almost never needed. And when in 4LO, how much can you do, etc.?

I needed 4 low

I have only really needed it once, and boy was I glad I had it. I was taking my sons camping last spring and I was pulling a trailer. I was camping in some remote mountainous area. I was on timber company land. I missed the turnoff and knew it would be about 5 miles on rough mud/gravel road before I would find another road for a turn around. Stupid me thought "I bet I can turn it around in the road." If I would have seriously looked at the drop off at the edge of the road I would have driven on. Needless to say, I am getting turned around and the trailer begins to go over the side. I stand on the brakes. I knew I needed to not only have the power to pull it out but also without slipping. 4 Wheel low saved my bacon. Of course, not one of the stories you tell your wife.

Re: I needed 4 low

4-Low is mostly needed for rocks, steep inclines (up and down) and where wheelspin is your enemy. If you have the flex 4-Lo is perfect for off-camber situations where too much wheelspin is going to break parts, it lets you creep over stuff which is especially good if you can't see over your hood. You shouldn't ever need it in snow or even mud unless you have a special situation like above when your pulling a trailer and need that extra low gear.

4LO.... hmmmmmmmm I started using it at Uwharrie after a lot of ribbing by my fellow wheelers (you know who you are)... makes all the difference on really steep rocky climbs.

I use 4-lo when launching a boat on a ramp, moving a heavy trailer or in the occasional ice storm that blows into Texas. You don't want wheel spin on that stuff.

On an interesting note - I had my wife use four low once when she first started driving a stick in town so she wouldn't choke it down and kill it at red lights until she got used to the clutch. You just can't hardly kill it in 4 low no matter how hard you pop the clutch. Also given the fact she was in low gears it tought her real quick how to shift gears and use that clutch since maximum speed was about 35 or so. That was on the '86.

I drove the CJ5 (manual tranny)in the sand and mud with very deep rutts. 4Lo forces me to go slow enough that I do not bounce over the rough rutts and stuff... Not that I needed the extra gearing but flat out top speed was about 35 MHP. In 4Hi I would find my top speed closing in on 45-50 MPH... That was just a little fast. My best hill climbs were in 4Lo -Second gear.... It just felt like it climbed better in 4Lo second than it did in 4Hi first or second. Could also purly driver preferance.

While not in the sand there were plenty of times where 4Hi first gear was simply too fast. One gas... One Clutch... No Brakes..

In my XJ (DD) I use 4Lo less... I am not sure if it is because the XJ has a slushbox or if I am not pushing it to the ends of its limits like I did the CJ. Anyways I, believe that normally I do not NEED the gears but I want the ability to go slower (less MPH) with the same engine RPM.

For most of my wheeling trips I think the XJ would do just fine in either 4Hi or 4Lo. I use 4Lo just to make sure I am going no faster than what is required. The type of wheeling is also differant... my xj gets more light trails and mud puddles than deep mud, off-camber, crawl over that thing that the CJ did.

When I had my truck before I wrecked
it I used 4lo a lot, just because of the lack of power. I have found that in 4lo in the XJ and in any vehicle for that matter it lets you have plenty of power without thi wheelslip and lets you handle the vehicle easier. Especially with a manual, just pick a gear and set it on her way.

OT: just hit 600 posts

I always wanted to use 4LO but my dad thinks that when i use it, something will go wrong because it is "too complex". He just thinks it is one more thing to go wrong.
