Wheel and brakes problem, Help?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

OK 2 things..

1) on the rear brake drums of my CJ, the drum is held on my 3 screws....the metal of these screws is so soft that a regular screw driver (correct sixe and all) begins to strip the ohillips slot on them. Whats the best way to get these screws out?

2) on my front wheels...when i engage the locking hub (superwinch brand) theres a little play between the wheel and the axle when i look at the U-joint....i can move the wheel a few inches both ways before the axle starts to move (hope im making sense here). Is this normal? or do i need to adjust something?

thanks a bunch

Re: Wheel and brakes problem, Help?!

If the screws are not too badly striped yet give them a good soaking of WD 40 for a couple of hrs. Every once in a while go over to the drum and give give the screw heads a light tapping with a small ballpeen. (vibration and WD 40 works wonders.) Then get a # 3 phillips with a square shank (so you can put a small adjustable on shank). Bear down on driver with all your weight and use the wrench. If this dont work or they strip out more go get yourself an impact driver... (the kind that you strike with a hammer) even if the screws are stripped the hardened steel tip of the driver will make new phillips slots. After using the impact driver, you will of course have to replace the screws with new ones. And don't forget to apply a little bit of "Neversize" on the treads so you wont have this problem again.

Those screws aren't even necessary, as far as I can figure the only purpose they served was holding the drums on on the assembly line! The easiest way to get them off, NO, the screws won't come out, is to just drill off the heads. They are countersunk, so the right size bit just fits right there, drills the head right off right down to the drum, then just pull the drum off. Then you can grab whats left of the screw with a vise grips. Oh, and DON'T put new screws in, like I said, they have no purpose.

Ditto, forgot the screws
As for your front axel the ujoints should not have any play. If they do they need to be replaced. Pull your hub and take off the spindle and the axel shaft will slide right out. The c clips that hold the ujoint in are located close to the center of the ujoint before the cap. It's the opposite of driveshaft ujoints.

Pigpen, i think you misread my post.....this wouldnt be a U joint problem....the axle is fine....im tralking about play between the wheel and the axle shaft...not the two parts of the axles.

am i making any sense here...HELP!

I think the only place you could get slop if the hub is locked, would be the splines, they would have to be damaged. I think it would be possible for the locking hub to be damaged too. I buoght the warn premiums from desert rat for 99.99 pr. I think they're great.
