What\'s Your Gas Mileage

Now that I've go the Jeepster smog checked and running right I've been averaging about 18 MPG for two tanks of gas (23 gal tank). Trying to figure out if this is the best that I can do. Here how the truck is set up.

Original 225, rebuilt in '95 .030 over, new Delco dist timed at 5 BTDC (dwell at 30), stock 2 barrel rochester, performance air cleaner installed, T-14 3 speed, 3:73 gears. Driven 17 miles one way to work daily average speeds 65-75 for 13 of those miles. Other four miles are stop and go.

Tried the pointless distributor and didn't like how it ran, might have been a bum distributor but I got tired of screwing with it after a year. Yes is was for an odd fire, so I don't want that advice about changing the distributor. The Delco responds well and never hesitates when punching it at 70 MPH to get out of the way of someone who cuts you off here in Vegas (daily occurrance).

Any ideas on how to maybe get it a little better now that gas prices are starting to soar again. Summer is here and the oil emipre isn't going to give us a break I don't think. Let me know what everyone else is getting on their beasts and your set ups.

Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: What\'s Your Gas Mileage

I only get 18 in my new Wrangler! The Jeepster was averaging around 12 m/g before it got creamed. The Half Cab to replace it got about 11 (only on the road 1 full tank).

I'd count your blessings with 18!

Re: What\'s Your Gas Mileage

18 is about tops I think, the best I have had was 16. My Wrangler gets 15, my Tacoma gets 22, and the WJ gets 16 on a good day. So I say the 18 is killer! If you need more, most small cars are getting around 50 MPG now....

Between 16 and 18, city driving or highway does not seem to matter (225 / Turbo400 / completely stock)

Cheers

Re: What\'s Your Gas Mileage

With gas prices really high here, other than drivivg Ben's Benz, which is diesel and gets 55mpg, I have done some experimenting. Driving an average of 50mph gets me 15mpg,,driving slower at 40mph gets me 20mpg, but everyone else on the highway gets all upset with me,,honking their horns and waving madly, so what do you do? Burn all that extra fuel and pollute the air to just allow the race to continue!

Did a roadtrip recently. About 16 on the highway, manual tranny, with a full load of cargo, and an occasional misfire.

John,

About those small cars. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for having to sell my '56 Beetle when I was transfered to Japan in the mid '80s. That buggy got around 45 on the highway and high 30s in the city. I guess that why the government made the polution standards so tough that VW didn't want to screw with it after '79. A high mileage poluter isn't that so bad...

Re: What\'s Your Gas Mileage

Im getting a tad over 20 right now. I probably have the tallest ratio hitting the pavement with
3.31s and 31inch tires. Engine is stock 225 with Rochester carb and the t-400 tranny.
The mileage is good but I'd trade for some shorter gears in a hot second.
