what year wagoneer d44\'s will fit cj7

im looking to buy i jeep for offroading/daily driving. I found a decent deal on a 83 cj7 for $1000, and i 87 grand wagoneer for $1200. I was thinking of buying both and swapping the d44's from the grand wagoneer into the cj7, will this work? Are the diffs the correct offset. If this year grand wagoneer won't work, will any years work? TIA

any year of wagoneer will work, but note that they have wider axles than any cj. this will require some fabrication (moving of suspension and steering compenents to work. also most wagoneers were 6 lug from 75 on, your cj is 5. so unless you are building a rock monster, this may not be such a good idea.

Mike,
You can use the rear from the wagoneer that you found but I bet that it will be a Model 20 with is fine since the ones in the wagoneers had the factory one piece axles. As for the front you will need to find one from a 1979 and older wagoneer because the diff is on the passenger side like your CJ, the 80 and newer wagoneer had the front diff on the drivers side. They do work well exspecially if you are going to lift your jeep 4" , the caster on the front 44 from a wagoneer is 6* (I think that is right)instead of 0* of your CJ. You will have to build some spring hanger perches on the outside of the frame for the front springs and the back you can just move your spring pads in to the original CJ width and you are done. By the way, the wheel pattern of the wagoneer will be a 6 hole (chevy, toyota, Nissan) instead of the 5 on 5 1/2" of your CJ. Go for it, they really handle nice on the trail I think.
