Okay, here's my $.02... Finish Jeepskate quickly, at least to the point where it's driveable, and sell 1last7. Then, the scrambler can be a long term project, while you can still drive and 'wheel in Jeepskate. That thing is just way too cool to get rid of. If worst came to worst, you could probably find another CJ-7 Laredo in similar or better condition, but you'll never find another, uh, Jeepskate. Of course, since you did all the work, you could recreate it, but why do the work twice? If you did decide to keep 1last7, I'm sure you could sell Jeepskate pretty quick though... Bottom line, don't sell Jeepskate. If you have to keep the scrambler, then sell 1last7. Just my opinion. Either way, keep sharing the knowledge. Your site has given me more ideas than I have dollars (what else is new...). Happy Jeepin'!

Given the option (garage space/time/money/etc..) I'd have one beefed up trail jeep and one nice daily driver. Sounds like you've got the trail vehicle.
Shine up the Scrambler and use it as a daily driver. I'm thinking of doing the same only in reverse (Scrambler for off roading and a nice CJ7 for the trip to
work.)

Your wife is gonna let you keep 2 Jeeps, no fair. I only get to keep one (and my new Dodge truck, and my '69 Chevelle, and my '68 Ford... OK, so she's got a point) Well, bear in mind that no matter how cool it is you're probably not going to get enough out of "Jeepskate" to pay for your cost (including time and effort). Not to mention that you will have built a great Jeep and not had a chance to enjoy the fruit of your labor. If it were me, I'd keep it for at least a little longer. From the sounds of this 8 it's gonna need some serious organ donations. What if 1last7, were to courageously lay down it's life so that the 8 could live?
I regularly see an 8 out here in L.A. with a 7's hard top. Personally I think it looks a little odd, but if I catch the guy at a Quickie-Rob I'll ask him about the bulkhead. Good Luck.

I didn't enter into Jeepskate ever expecting to get out of it as much as I put into it. I already did some rough figuring and other than labor, all I'd be out is the Durabak, some Bondo, a couple of feet of brake line, the sleeves for the shackle reversal, and some primer if I were to strip it. There's no way I'd sell Jeepskate as it sits...either the Scrambler becomes Jeepskate or I sell 1Last7. No way I'd strip a fully-loaded Laredo from the last run of CJ's to donate the parts to something else...gotta have your principles ;-)

 

I;ve been watching your site for at least 1 year. KEEP JEEPSKATE! or some of us will cry cause we didn't see the finished project! lol. Just my opinion!lol

Hehe...that's a LOT of shining. My thought process for stripping Jeepskate is that the Scrambler would need most of what's in/on/under it (nose, drivetrain, interior), and the '86 can just continue the way it is until I can afford to restore it. Also, the Scrambler would be more useful to me off-road since I have a wife and kid and visitng family that has indicated a desire to go out with us the next time they visit, so I could use the extra space. The jury is still out and I change my mind every week, so I'm just trying to absorb some other opinions.

 

As soon as I finish up my fiance's 77's wiring, I'll have another spot in my driveway...nudge, nudge, wink, wink....

No way I'd sell Jeepskate...the Scrambler would become Jeepskate. Why do the work twice? 'Cause I'm crazy ;-) Making the Scrambler a long term project after selling 1Last7 isn't an option. If I sold it, the money from it would have to get the Scrambler on the road at least by the Winter...not trying to use a trail rig for my daily driver.

 

I think something got lost in the translation. I would not sell Jeepskate, I would strip it and the Scrambler would become Jeepskate/Jeepsk8.

You want me to strip parts off of it? A last of breed vehicle that just needs an engine rebuild and a new tub? I can't see it, nor I could I bring myself to do it.

I agree with you "Save the last Laredo" and put all you efforts and Jeepskates innerds into the 8 and have a Jeepskate8. This is just my $.02 on the matter.

Come on J.S....Another one. Personally i say sell the cj8. I don't know whats caused the recent resurgance of the scrambler. They are ugly with all that rear end hanging out back. Looks like my old lady!! I like the bobbed cj8's though. If you recycled jeepskates parts you'd only really loose the frame and tub work. Thats acceptable. I'm like you, the fun is in the building. Not the driving. my lady is wanting a jeep, i might be able to give 1last7 a home if you tell me what you'd need from it.

i think you should build-up "jeepskeight", (but i don't know how much spare time you have) why did you let it follow you home anyway? OR you could do what i've done, keep it at you friends house til you have an opening at home.

Heck, you should finish something by spring.
At least make it driveable to get it out of the way to work on another.
Or... sell me the "1 Last" .. i need a frame and a Dana 44...since you (not literally) stole it. Just drive it over to Moab or here - play- and fly back!
I suggest you plan on tricking out the 8's frame with coils ...
(it IS the new wave)
... then tossing everthing onto it in the future.

 

I hate that your in the position of making this decision. I would love to see Jeepskate get finished, but I agree that all those parts could go into the 8. You have the skill and the resources to rebuild that six in the Laredo. You don't see many people keep a Jeep in what is mostly a factory setup. I think that Laredo can become a collector vehicle, much like the original WW11 Jeeps. My vote, build up the 8, turn the Laredo into an original restoration. (That Laredo suspension is a reversible upgrade.)

 

That's my thinking. I put the Laredo seats up in the loft of the garage shortly after I bought it, the original springs are sitting on the floor in the garage, and the other things I've done are all minor and easily reversible.

 

I'm kinda broke right now (not really, but the holidays are coming so I may as well be), so how great of a deal are we talking and how soon are you looking to move that drivetrain?

 

Hide it? Um, my wife already knows that I have it, so there's not much point to that. Once I borrow my buddy's engine hoist again, I can have Jeepskate reduced to a pile of parts again inside of a weekend and have the 8 stripped the rest of the way in a day probably. Sorry, but I wont't sell 1Last7 to become a parts donor...now the frame & 44 from Jeepskate are another story (I've got a 9" rear sitting on the garage floor)...
The thought of coils has definitely passed through my mind, but I don't want to side-track myself so far that I'm still futzing with the thing next Winter ;-) Might go on and do the front in lieu of re-doing the front shackle reversal, we'll see...

 

Yeah, things are definitely looking like it's going to become Jeepskeight. I'll make the time...can burn off at least a week or two of vacation time from work if needed. Why'd I let it follow me home? Well:
1) It's a CJ-8, that's darn near reason enough in my book ;-)
2) I got it dirt cheap
3) One of my future upgrades to Jeepskate was a stretch job...this is a heckuva lot cheaper
I have room for it at home...was actually out in the garage a couple of nights ago moving Jeepskate over and making room for it in the garage so my wife won't complain about it sitting outside with the lovely blue tarp over it. I don't think any of my friends want it in their driveway, it's pretty darn ugly ;-)
