I have an '80 CJ-7 with a newly rebuilt 330hp 350, TH350 auto (about 35,000 miles), Dana 300 transfer case, Scout axles (Detroit rear, Lockright front), SOA w/ 2" lift springs (ramps 1250), Wrangler tub, and way too many other things to list. The only problem is that the frame is shot. It is rusted out badly and is splitting apart. I'm taking it to the weld shop this week to see what they can do for it, but I know this will only be a temporary fix. What would be the best thing to do? Sell it? Buy a Jeep with a blown engine and use that frame and sell the rest? Buy aftermarket frame?

I think the amount of money you have already invested leaves you with only one thing to do, frame replacement. Your only real choice is buy or build, if you own a decent mig welder and can fabricate you would be money ahead to build your own out of retangular box tubing, if not, after market frames are relatively expensive, but still cheaper than any other option. (willys-overland had some stock frames for $800, but i do not recall for what years).
good luck jjc

I would recoment that you buy a new frame from Matkin or AFW since you have so much money into it right now. I don't have that much into my Jeep, but it has been welded 7 times already (the worst crack was 2.5 foot long split). I ordered the frame plates from MORE last week and I will be putting them on March 7-8. With enough prep I think I can make the frame last without having to buy a new one.

I saw those frame plates on MORE's website. Let us know how it comes out, I am thinking about getting them too. I have
that frame rust in the rear like many others, so I'd like to know how looks and how it went together.

Alec I'll let you guys know how they come out. It is going to be a couple of weeks before I can get to it, but I'll let you know. My Jeep is rusted at the shackles and on the inside of the frame. I ordered 2 sets of rear plates and they gave me a $50 discount since I don't need 2 sets of the bottom plates. If I can get my hands on a digital camera I'll post some pictures.

if you aren't made of money, wrangler frames are MUCH stronger than cj frames and the are a lot easier to find..it take a little creativity to mount the body, but not bad...the engine mounts for your application are $160 from hicks... i called last week for mine.

it's sort of still a cj thingy....

There is a guy with a frame (YJ) for sale on the for sal other list. I wouldn't mind buying his axles but I do't really need the frame.
