Are you sure it's a 350 or is it an amc 360? If it's really a chevy 350 you could have a chevy trans and xfer case, or a 350 and chevy trans adapted to a jeep xsfer case or a 350 adapted to a jeep trans and xsfer case or if it came from the factory with the iron duke 4 cyl it could have a 350 bolted right to the iron duke bellhousing. You're gonna have to crawl around underneath it and see if you can get some id from it that way.

It had to have been behind an "Iron Duke" 4- cylinder, as that's the only GM bolt-pattern engine that was in an '81. I don't have a good handle on which 4-speed that was. The options look like either the T-176 or SR4. If the transmission sides look relatively smooth, then it should be a T-176. If it has about 4 horizontal ribs in the casting, then it's an SR4. I'm going from some of my reference stuff, maybe one of the other guys will have better info. The T176 is a good tranny, but I believe it was only behind the 6 and V8s. You may want to try a search of Off-Road.com's archives for "81 cj transmission" or something similar. You'll be amazed at what has been covered on this forum.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific for you.

BTW Welcome to the Jeep community! Above all else, ride, get off-road, and wave to all the other Jeeps even if they don't wave back.

The SR-4 isn't worth putting gear fluid into. Let me take a guess on the shifter, the bottom stub broke off or wore out? My SR-4 didn't even last behind the original 4 cylinder, If you have a 350, swap in an SM465, you won't regret it, you'll never kill it, and they're cheap. If the shifter is curved, it's the SR-4, if the shaft is straight, it's the T-176. If the tranny works fine now, give it a few months, it'll start to die on you.

The SM465 is a HD Chev tranny,it has a great 6.55 1st gear(real slow for controlled crawl speed)It will bolt right up to your chev 350,but will require a $500 adapter to mate up to your dana 300 transfercase(plus it must be tore down and an adapter mainshaft installed)and a 2" bodylift or some tinwork on the floor(its big)your other option is to install a chev transfercase.possibly a NP 208c or a bulletproof but heavy and higher geared NP 205
also if yor swapping tranny's,its a great time to go with a auto if you want /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
