I removed the dash on my 87 YJ. Behind the dash piece with the grab handle is a little bronze canister with a pivot handle on it. Connected to it is a blue vacuum hose running to a small yellow plastic junction. A black hose runs from this to the intake manifold through the firewall. When I press the pivoting handle air is forced out through a hole in the junction. I need to know the function of this unit. Is it missing a hose where the extra hole in the junction is? Does it have anything to do with the 4WD engagement? Im stripping the engine of all unnecessary wires and sensors for a new non-emissions engine so any info will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The thing you describe is an actuator for the vent/heater system. It gets plumbed into the vacuum harness on the back of the heater control. It should only have one hose on it if I'm not mistaken. Good luck.
