Jeep Commando 72 c101

36" TSL Super Swampers (new)
Dana 60 rear, 4.56 gears Detroit Lockers
Dana 44 front 4.56 gears Detroit Lockers
2 V8 motors maybe runs
2 set seats
1 driveline missing
1 transmission
Hardtop

The owner had the axels pro built and never used them. The rear axel is the only one attached. It has been sitting outside in portland OR for about 6 years now. The tires and axels were new, never used. What do youthink this is worth? What are the chances of the axels and tires still being good? The body seems fairly straight with some rust.

You may want to fill out your profile with email, etc as there are many Jeepster/Commando owners in or nearby Portland. They may be able to help you take a look at it. It is always difficult to say what something is worth without seeing it, or knowing your intentions of doing to it. Good luck!

I would personaly give 2 grand just for the axles tires and springs asuming the springs are near new and the axles narrowed to near 60 inches WMS to WMS. The Detroits and gears would run about $1500.00 just for parts.

The tires have been exposed to all weather, the whole rig has. What is an easy way of telling if the tires have dry rot? Do you just look for the cracking?

Is there any quick way of determine if the diff inners are to damage without pulling the covers?

What are some other areas of a 72 that are common to failure or got-chas to lookout for?
I read an earlier post about the frame cracking around the shock mounts I think and also something about the steering box not being braced.

I want to wheel this thing. Does the frame need to be boxed to really hold up? I have never seen a commando on the trail but I beat that wheel base can make a nice change with some meats under opposed to the short TJ I currently wheel?

I am new to commandos and all advice would be welcome.

Thanks

with tires that big, I would definitely suggest either boxing the frame or tying in the roll cage to the frame. Also check very closely around the cast iron steering box mount for cracks. If there is no brace, I would not even drive it until you make one. As far as the diffs go, IMO just pull the plugs and make sure there is lube in there. You should be fine. I have rescued lots of rigs that have sat for years and never did a thing to the diffs. Good luck.

That sounds like a good project, Are the springs new? I'm over on the west side of Portland, if you want to look at my 72 to get an idea of what goes where on your project, and I would be happy to share what I've learned so far about these things. Also are the seats good I'm looking for a 60. 40 front seat with good upholstry.

I don't think the springs are new. As for the seat if I remember right they were two buckets. With a 60/40 front and a bench rear should I have any problem seating 5 - 2 with car seats? I live off next Wilson High school in Multnomah. That would be great to swing by and check out your rig. Think I could swing by this Saturday sometime?
