I was wondering what gears come stock in a cj-7, I think it is a 77 or 79 model. It has the 258 straight 6 and 4 speed tranny. The gears seem very high (probably 3.08 or even 2.47 or worse). The jeep doesn't have very much power out of 1st gear and reverse is even worse. The motor is new. It's always lacked torque. I was hoping someone might know the ratio so I don't have to take the back cover off and count teeth.

I would guess that it depends on what transmission is in it. My buddy's '78 which has the granny gear T18 has 4.10's in it. Is there any kind of tag on it? If you don't see one on the rear diff, check the front as they tend to get serviced less and chances are fewer that someone lost the tag. Not much help, am I?

My '77 w/ the T-150 3-speed has 3.54 which isn't great but beats 3.08. But check the tag to be certain.
