yes, first of all, OBD 3 is correct.....
so what do you guys think of this new diagnostic system?

for you guys not up to date on it.
OBD III is going to be much like OBDII as far as the code reading/diagnostic menus go, but the new thing is the satelite linking, and the CAN linking.

the CAN is going to be a PITA becuase most of our current scan tools cannot read it, and only some can be made to, so the techs are getting new tools again.... the snap on scanners will be out dated as far as i know now with this technology..... as they will only be able to read the simplier OBDIII cars. others like the mastertech can be updated.

now for the everyday owner....
the satelite linking will now be able to spy on you like the blackboxes in airplanes.
your speed will be able to be recorded, as well as records if you where to get into an accident will be in the box.....it will be able to tell the people monitering this your current staticis(RPM, Speed, location)
so not only does it spy on you, but it also will cost you!

now with the check engine lights...
if you get one that is a hard code and stays on, the DMV, EPA and other places can be contacted notifying them that you have an emissions trouble code..
if the light does not go off in a certain time, you will get notified that you must get the car fixed within a certain date or you liscence/registration will be suspended?
So how is that for the EPA being big brother just to keep emmisions down?

this is going in some foreign cars, alot of GM cars with OnStar, and some ford products, watch those papers you sign when you buy a new car, as you have to agree to the system, but many dealers disguise it in all the paperwork

Man, I'm against anything that can track me that I can't turn off. I took a "Social Issues in Computing" class last semester. I wasn't paranoid about the government before that, but am I ever now. That class pointed out countless examples of the government abusing their power even in spite of the laws.

I wonder if the good ole "tin foil hat" trick will work on the black box. Probably not though, since it will be buried in tons of metal anyway. Which brings up a question, how does that work? I've got Sirius Satellite and that antenna cannot be under any amount of metal or it won't work (even the metallic tater chip bags).

Anyway, I cannot overstate how against this I am!

Can't you just take it out or is it going to be also regulating everything such as another computer working with the truck's existing but also be able to transmit?!

its already coming out....
good luck removing it, as it will probably be in the main ECU for the powertrain, plus they will probably have regulations against any tampering with it.

OBII is already a PITA.
shure diagnosing is really easy, and gives you all the info, but it costs a fortune to read it all...
my EBPV was sticking on my powerstroke today and acting as a jake brake.
of course i don't have a cartraige for the ford diesels, and OBDII gheneric wouldnt read EBPV percentage of apply rate, so i rig stuff just to test it.
nothing like driving around with your voltmeter shoved under your wiper balde and the leads shoved in the electrical connecter going to the turbo right?

That's a crack up!

I must admire your ingenuity though.

Hey, I've done the same thing with a vacuum gauge.
Had the hose running from under the hood, through the vent window, and connected to the gauge propped on the dash.
