what do you all think about a VW Bug/Baja?

I'm trying to figure out what vehichle I should buy next. I figure my Wrangler will be able to pull the sailboat rig just down to the Marina on the extremely few occasions I'll need it to. (I plan to keep the boat at a mooring.) So What I'm looking for is a daily driver that gets good gas mileage, is easy to work on, and a blast to drive (something I can still take "short-cuts" with).

So I started looking up VW Baja pages and it seems as though these are really capable machines! A friend of mine used to have one and said it got around 40mpg! This sounds too good to be true. A fun, capable machine that gets nearly 4 times the mileage my Jeep does and is cheap as hell to insure!

They don't get that good of mileage, more like 25-30mpg with a stock motor, but it gets worse as the motors get faster because they rev so high.....

Bugs dont have alot of room inside of them and the noise and viberations from the motor are to "spinney" for me... and if you start jumping in one you'll never stop modifing it!!!

They do very well off road though.... but slow speed rockcralwing isn't fun for long....

They seem like a glorified quad off road and I like my bike better.....

I had VW Bajas and Buggies and I love them, but I never got real good MPG, but it was twice as much as my Jeep's 11mpg.

i almost bought a buggy instead of my jeep. i researched then for ever. i was going to get a shortend vw pan with a manx style body. with a 1600 or 1776 dule port. they only weigh around 1400 lbs. so a 60 hp engine makes them zip along compare the power to weight ratio of a mustan and a vw buggy. it woundn't be hard to get the buggh to have the same results. mustang 3300 lbs 200 hp. buggh 1400 lbs. 70 hp. some day i'll have one but i had to chose jeep or buggy and i chose jeep.

A blast, yet a bit different? How about a VW Thing!!! Brother-in-law has one, and it has become quite the "thing." You can get a convertable model, really a hoot to drive!! Great off road also, though very slow rock crawling is a bit difficult.

In my leaner, younger years I aquired a VW sand rail, and drove it all summer.
(Got 35 MPH!)

It was monkey bars with wheels, and chicks just loved it!
I had the body sections to turn it into a baja racer, but I left it bare.

Wish I'd never sold it. It was just a ton of fun!!

I had one for a daily driver after I blew the motor in my 4runner. Had tons of fun, it wasn't the pinacle of reliablity but it was easy to work on and parts were cheap. I wouldn't hessitate to buy another for daily driver duties. FYI daily driver duties alway involve taking short cuts./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Personally I'd go for a 65 or older, emissions is non existant and it's easier to convert the rear to IRS then the front to link pin. good Luck

Thanks guys, I just saw a "junker" VW Bug less than a mile from here. I'll take a look at it and see what year it is. Now I just have to get the Postal finished up and SOLD!

Some guy offered me a bug for free a while back..wasn't even in bad shape. It was pretty much the body and such..I dont think it had an engine though.Body was actually in good shape.I was thinking about taking him up on his offer but someone else got it before I talked to him next.
It didn't have wheels or tire either..but pretty much complete as I remember
