There is some wear on the spider gears. I am going to put a Detriot in there. Will that replace the spider gears. Also, is this an open carrier? If so the Detriot is a drop in right? Will I need to adjust backlash, etc?

The axle tube is narrower than my ten bolt. The spring pads center to center are the same though. I figured that because of the wider brakes the wheels will stick out the same, right? I have not been able to get a measurement.

Dude, that thing is WASTED. Look at the pits in the gears, and I think you will be lucky if the pinion housing isn't thrashed from it rubbing on the carrier... You need to get a different one if thats an option... too much garbage on the inside. Just my honest opinion... wait for something with a lot less wear to come along.

I want to put a detroit in there. Won't it replace those gears. I when you say gears, are you talking about the spider gears. How much would they be to replace? What do think about the width?

On the width measure the wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface distance and compare with your 10 bolt.

On the inside that things pretty wasted... The detroit will be a whole new carrier, not a drop in like the 14 bolt full floater uses.

You will have to set up the gears again, check backlash, set carrier bearing preload, run a pattern, etc. And by the looks of the marks on the carrier the pinion depth is way to deep if it's hitting the carrier. Whoever set the gears up had no idea what they were doing OR the pinion bearings are shot and allowed the pinion to move back OR the pinion nut backed off somehow and allowed the thing to drop in. With it being that deep I can almost guarantee that the gears are toast and you will need a new set.

Got any pics of the ring/pinion? If the spiders are that wasted the ring/pinion can't be too far behind...

I want to do a complete build up on this thing. Before I tear it apart I want to make sure that I have the right axle. Willys, you say that with the Detriot I will need a new carrier? If this is the case then it is not a big deal that the one in there is wasted, right? I haven't taken out the ring or pinion but they do not have any wear like the spider gears. They are 3.73 and look really good.

It looks pretty fscked to me. I wouldn't have spent more than $50 on it. And I've bought some real "gems" for axles.

The ring and pinion are junk. The carrier is junk. The spiders are such junk that it's scary. All of those pieces of metal went somewhere so the axle shafts are probably junk from metal getting in the bearings and ruining the bearing surface on the shafts. Unless I'm mistaken, I see a ring gear spacer in there and that's what probably screwed up the whoever installed the gears.

Basically, you bought a housing, a differential cover, backing plates, a yoke, and parking brake cables. If you're lucky the shafts are still good. I hope you didn't pay much for it.

Only thing that could possibly be ok is if all those markins came from a broken pinion. And the gears have since been replaced and such. So everything could be ok other than the spiders and the marks be from an old gear set but who knows.

Still my question...
Do I still need the spider gears with a Detroit? Does the Detroit take the place of the spider gears. Also if the Detroit is the carrier it doesn't matter that the current carrier is munched. If I do need new spider gears where could I find some. Are there only one size, say for a 14 bolt SF? Thanks

Lol, again, the detroit replaces the whole carrier. There are no spider gears in a detroit, if there were it wouldn't be a detroit, it would be an open carrier

But just by the looks of things your going to need a ring/pinion, carrier bearings, pinion bearings, shims, pinion nut, seals, wheel bearings, axle bearings, axle seals, etc.

Jason I knew that you would have all of the answers. So because I am putting in a detriot and regearing the f'd up stuff doesn't matter, unless it damaged the axles. Thanks for the help.

BTW does anyone know the WMS to WMS for a 4wd 10 bolt?
