Weber fine tuning

My new Weber runs great. However, during idle sometimes, it motor seems to want to stall out, like it's not turning enough RPMs. I have adjusted the idle up a little to compensate. Should I look into the fuel mixture adjustment too? I hate to mess with that screw too much for fear of creating a heavy rich condition or leaning it out too much.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like you definitely need to adjust the idle fuel mixture. Get ahold of a tach and get that thing dialed in, trying to do it by ear
just isn't accurate enough.

How do you know when the fuel mixture is right? Wouldnt you have to test the emissions? The Weber manual said 2 1/2 turns out is too lean and 1 1/2 turns out is too rich... so.. I set it at 2.

Sounds like the same problem I have with mine on my 89 YJ. I can set the mixture and idle on mine and the idle is dead on, then for no apparent reason, the idle will drop 300 RPM and the timing will drop 4 degrees. The neat thing is that it will still idle VERY smoothly after the drop, though I will notice what feels like a step in the timing and a power increase at about 1000 rpm.

Are you still running the stock ignition? I am, and I'm starting to think that the computer is screwing around with the timing. I'm about to replace the stock ignition with a Crane HI-6 that I have from a 280Z I restored a few years ago and see if that makes a difference.

Other than that, mine runs great too. Idles smoother than my buddies 4.0, so smooth that sometimes I have to check the tach to make sure it is running. More power, better MPG, no bogging.

Yes I am still running the stock ignition, but, it will be changed soon. I'll have to see what happens after I get it set perfectly by tach.

I did the retro to my '84 when I had the engine rebuilt. Had them use the wrong cam and now it has crappy throttle response. Don't think this is the fault of the carb in my case but it is very cold blooded in the WI winters. When I start it it always dies the first time and then I give it a couple more pumps and it fires up. If I touch the throttle then it will immediately go to low idle even though it is cold. Do you have any suggestions for this?

The easiest way to set your idle mixture is with a vacuum gauge. I usually will hook mine up to the brake booster, so that i don't have to touch any of the lines connected to the carb. Make sure your idle and timing are correct first, then set up a vacuum gauge and run the engine. What you are looking for is the highest reading possible. Turn your idle screw in small increments and just watch the gauge. It's pretty easy, and if you don't like it you can always go back to your original settings.

Thanks Jon...

That's the answer I was looking for...
Something usable....
